Title: Two upcoming exits on a gantry, but missing an exit in between
Post by: KCRoadFan on February 05, 2025, 12:16:21 AM
https://maps.app.goo.gl/nnmRADsNR4grKkYK8

Earlier this evening, I was driving west on I-70 back into Kansas City on my way home from the Independence Center mall area, and as I was doing so, I passed the gantry in the linked Street View photo - namely, the one at Exit 11 for US 40/Blue Ridge Boulevard, which has an adjacent sign for the upcoming interchange at I-435 (Exit 8) - however, there is an exit in between the two (namely, Exit 9 for Blue Ridge Cutoff, near the Royals and Chiefs stadiums) that goes unacknowledged at this point.

That made me wonder: throughout the country, where have you seen that phenomenon: namely, a gantry on a freeway with signs for two or more upcoming exits, but which omits the signage for another exit that happens to be in between the signed exits?

Here's one that immediately came to mind in the San Francisco area when I saw this thread title:

Bayshore Freeway northbound (US 101) between the Bayshore Boulevard/Paul Avenue exit (429C) and the Alemany Maze with I-280.

https://www.google.com/maps/@37.7181763,-122.3992055,3a,75y,336.58h,97.94t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sbvM8gzmQqDG4lonIJEHH6Q!2e0!6shttps:%2F%2Fstreetviewpixels-pa.googleapis.com%2Fv1%2Fthumbnail%3Fcb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile%26w%3D900%26h%3D600%26pitch%3D-7.936699690333228%26panoid%3DbvM8gzmQqDG4lonIJEHH6Q%26yaw%3D336.57865754232864!7i16384!8i8192?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI1MDIwMi4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D

Next Three Exits listed are:

I-280
Silver Avenue
Cesar Chavez (Army) Street

Completely ommited is the Alemany Boulevard/Bayshore Boulevard offramp that pops up about a half mile north of the Silver Avenue ramp.

The existing sign there is probably a 20+ year old retroreflective installation, and a lot of those in California over the years were replacements-in-place that tended to retain the existing text of the old button copy that had been there.

This is really common on I-290 in Worcester, MA.  This (https://www.google.com/maps/@42.25528,-71.7956463,3a,75y,36.97h,90.55t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sHZqvyPGMPmTAKQhLyQ6qzA!2e0!6shttps:%2F%2Fstreetviewpixels-pa.googleapis.com%2Fv1%2Fthumbnail%3Fcb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile%26w%3D900%26h%3D600%26pitch%3D-0.5490580026302183%26panoid%3DHZqvyPGMPmTAKQhLyQ6qzA%26yaw%3D36.96507865958128!7i16384!8i8192?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI1MDIwMi4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D) location is particularly noteworthy, because it happens twice within a quarter mile - this gantry is for exits 19 and 21, skipping exit 20, and the next gantry has exits 18 and 20, skipping exit 19!  The reverse direction even has one for exits 20 and 16 (https://www.google.com/maps/@42.2682209,-71.7933766,3a,37.6y,181.59h,93.05t/data=!3m8!1e1!3m6!1spQy2MVLJoQ-qZKFatYn2cg!2e0!5s20231201T000000!6shttps:%2F%2Fstreetviewpixels-pa.googleapis.com%2Fv1%2Fthumbnail%3Fcb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile%26w%3D900%26h%3D600%26pitch%3D-3.0514779958557483%26panoid%3DpQy2MVLJoQ-qZKFatYn2cg%26yaw%3D181.59381237162407!7i16384!8i8192?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI1MDIwMi4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D), skipping exits 18 and 17!

This happens occasionally in Utah approaching a major freeway junction.

I-215 northbound in West Valley City (https://maps.app.goo.gl/QEyPH7pecfgQN8UDA) approaching SR 201 (exit 20), with signs for I-80 (exit 22) in a few miles. Not included is the California Avenue exit (21).

Not too far from there, I-15 in Woods Cross (https://maps.app.goo.gl/i5iUfRASKAqwzbW36) has a sign for 2600 South (315) and the north interchange with I-215 (313), but skips North Salt Lake's Center Street exit (314).

Kind of a fringe case, but this overhead sign (https://maps.app.goo.gl/ouMZ7oMW4gNcbQFF9) on I-490 eastbound mentions the Thruway (I-490's eastern terminus) without mentioning Exit 29, which lies between this point and the Thruway.

US 169 in the west suburbs of MSP does this twice.

Going south in Plymouth, after Medicine Lake Road the next three exits are listed as Plymouth Ave/TH 55/I-394, omitting Shelard Parkway between 55 and 394.

Going north in Hopkins after TH 7, the next three exits are listed as Minnetonka Blvd/Cedar Lake Road/I-394, omitting the 16th St RIRO right before 384.

This may be because many exits from what is now 290 in downtown Worcester are one-direction only (i.e., east exit/west entrance or vice versa).  Many have been reconfigured since the road (originally MA 52) was first built, but apparently MassDOT never reworked the signage.

In Somerville, NJ WB US 22 where panels for upcoming Commons Way and US 202/206 ignore North Bridge Street which is the first exit for that stretch.

Considering North Bridge served the control city from Hillside West, it should be most prominent there.

However Commons Way is important because of the mall after the exit than Downtown Somerville.

These are with the mile-based exit numbers and the exits I mentioned are ones that exist in their given direction (the first one I mentioned even had the missing exits on the next gantry - you can click the street view and see for yourself).  It's more like MassDOT wanted to provide the same distance advance warning as always but had to get creative because the exits are spaced so close together.

This assembly on the EB I-94 in Chicagoland qualifies (https://maps.app.goo.gl/TpBNyyvPNApefk6c7) - the Willow Road exit comes after the I-94/I-294 split.

This one kinda makes sense, given that the SR 201 is marked as "to I-80". The distance to I-80 exit here provides a bit of context that maybe taking SR 201 is faster if you're bound for I-80 in either direction.

Going southbound on I-75 in metro Atlanta, approaching I-285 from the north, the first I-285 sign is more than 4 miles in advance, thus missing several exits.

A couple instances from I-695 in the Baltimore area:

-SB/Outer approaching I-95 exit 11, two gantries have signs for exits 12C-B (https://www.google.com/maps/@39.2668973,-76.7150525,3a,46.9y,128.07h,90.21t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1s0bY3oRAuHVNdytQfV5GhpQ!2e0!6shttps:%2F%2Fstreetviewpixels-pa.googleapis.com%2Fv1%2Fthumbnail%3Fcb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile%26w%3D900%26h%3D600%26pitch%3D-0.2063651165208995%26panoid%3D0bY3oRAuHVNdytQfV5GhpQ%26yaw%3D128.07420686250313!7i16384!8i8192!5m1!1e1?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI1MDIwMy4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D) & exits 11B-A (https://www.google.com/maps/@39.2628405,-76.7080041,3a,46.9y,135.42h,88.79t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sg4OrlSWQ5psc8blIhbVJJA!2e0!6shttps:%2F%2Fstreetviewpixels-pa.googleapis.com%2Fv1%2Fthumbnail%3Fcb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile%26w%3D900%26h%3D600%26pitch%3D1.2086686647213298%26panoid%3Dg4OrlSWQ5psc8blIhbVJJA%26yaw%3D135.41503129834965!7i16384!8i8192!5m1!1e1?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI1MDIwMy4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D) and omit exit 12A in-between.
