Title: Knoxville Bypass Revisited by Local Leaders
Post by: Chrysler375Freeway on March 17, 2025, 07:27:18 PM
This month, a previously-planned-then-cancelled bypass of Knoxville (the Orange Route) has been revisited after being cancelled in 2010, although it won't follow the path of the old Orange Route due to the path it would have taken near/through Hardin Valley being too developed. A similar bypass was proposed in the form of the Orange Route, although it won't be the same as that. One thing is that traveling to Sevierville earlier in the month, dealing with the I-40/I-75 segment was a bit of a mess and added time due to traffic counts. I'm genuinely curious what the new route could potentially look like since the Orange Route can't be revisited due to that area it would have passed through being too developed.

The original Orange Route would have followed this alignment:  https://web.archive.org/web/20061105125118/http://www.knoxvilleparkway.com/. I highly doubt TN 475 will ever be revived.

Even though it doesn't look like 475 will ever be revived, it looks like a bypass keeps coming up and disappearing again, all by local leaders wanting it built, even though the state doesn't feel the same way about it, even though I-40/I-75's traffic counts keep increasing.

SR 170 to SR 162, bypass, problem solved.

Roads with single lane rail underpasses (i.e. 170 in Heiskell) don't lend themselves very well to being effective bypasses.

Now, if you're willing to put money into improving 170, then perhaps it's a possibility.  But given your reputation on this forum, I doubt that's the case.

I know the space really isn't there, but I think local/express (non-tolled) would work for 40/75.

For a new alignment bypass, maybe realign I-40 south of Knoxville around Maryville between the southern 40/75 interchange and TN 66. Could also use I-140?
