Title: Wisconsin wins 8th Women's hockey title
Post by: SEWIGuy on March 23, 2025, 07:23:41 PM
In 2002, Mark Johnson of Miracle on Ice fame, was an assistant on the University of Wisconsin men's hockey team. He was passed over for the head gig when the coach retired, but agreed to take over the women's program. 22 seasons later, he has won 8 national titles. The coach who passed him over DID win a men's championship, but the program has struggled since.

His dad, Bob Johnson, built the UW men's program from scratch and also coached in the NHL for the Flames and Penguins, winning a Stanley Cup with the latter.

Great job by the women's hockey team. Helps to make up for the men's basketball team flaming out in the tournament.

The Badgers have had a strong and popular ice hockey program (both sides) for as long as I have been aware ::cool:

Pretty awesome!

I'm really hoping Michigan gets their women's ice hockey program going, my niece plays youth hockey and I really want that team to exist by the time she's ready for college. :D

When I was growing up in Madison, it was really the only UW event worth attending.

Kinda still is, unless you like volleyball, or a basketball team that underperforms at this time of year. Badger football and mens' hockey have been a joke for half a decade now.

Late 70s, early 80s me would have LOVED to see the success of the recent basketball and football teams.

I remember how bad the football teams wear in the 80s. Glad the culture change when Barry got here.

Was halfway respectable under MczLean, then abysmal under Morton.

Happy for Mark, former captain of your Hartford Whalers.
