Title: I-105 Los Angeles
Post by: Plutonic Panda on April 21, 2025, 05:03:56 PM
I swear I created a thread on this, but for the life of me, I cannot find it. Anyways, I'm creating one and if it's a duplicate, sorry mods, please merge.

As some may know, there is a project to convert the HOV lane into a tolled express lane. They had several alternatives one obviously was a no build. They selected the alternative that would convert the existing HOV lane into a toll lane and add another toll lane. I do not believe they are going to be taking away any GP lanes for this which is good.

It appears they've quietly already began construction on it, which is probably smart on their part given the anti-Car nuts like Joe Linton would get their panties in a wad writing articles left and right about it and the horrible freeways that are killing everybody in Southern California.

QuoteThis current phase of construction work activities along the shoulder of the corridor in Segment 1 is anticipated to continue through the end of 2026. Overall construction for Segment 1 of the I-105 corridor is anticipated to be completed in 2028. Segments 2 and 3 are anticipated to start construction in mid-2026 and are anticipated to be completed in 2029.

Here is an information packet that shows the alternatives and I believe they have selected alternative which is now under construction:

It looks like they picked Alternative 3, which I find surprising. I would hope they'd still have an HOV 2+ discount but the presentation doesn't give me confidence (I suspect they'll make it 3+). When I was dropping my wife off at LAX this weekend, I saw little work done on that section, though (we drove the carpool lanes all the way from the 605 to Sepulveda).

Correct me if I'm wrong but the harbor Freeway toll lanes are free with 2+. Now I believe the new 10 toll lanes in San Bernardino are free with 3+. I haven't heard anything about what the minimum occupancy will be for for HOV access for the 105 toll lanes.

Yes, the new San Bernardino county 10 express lanes are free to 3+, same as the 15 express lanes.

Not a fan of adding a lane by deleting the shoulder and narrowing the lanes.

Oh well it was good while it lasted. It was comfortable driving I-105 before with its standard design.

I'll like the added lanes. They are needed more than a shoulder if it has to come down between the two IMO.

It's more the narrowing of the lanes that I don't like. Even FHWA's own studies show that going from 12 ft lanes to 11 ft lanes increased accidents slightly and reduced free flow speed slightly

Honestly, I prefer more travel lanes even if that comes at the expense of shoulders and 12 ft lanes to 11 feet. The more lanes the better.

This project is well underway and grading is being done to prep for the widening. I'm a bit surprised the anti car nuts aren't bitching about it online.
