Title: All Roads End Eventually...

Bouncing off of this random ranting in the Unique/Odd/Interesting thread today:

Quote from: 74/171FAN on April 27, 2025, 06:55:05 PMI guess beltways officially have a start/finish line like racetracks.

Before the replacement of the Fuller Warren Bridge in Jacksonville back in 2002, there was a continuous freeway starting near Evans Point in Washington, D.C.; zig-zagging through Richmond; turning west in Jacksonville; and ending at the airport in Baton Rogue.  If you followed the medians and barriers down the middle, you effectively had a route numbering that was I-395//I-95//I-10//I-12//I-10//I-110.  This only counts if the you can follow the median/barriers in both directions and end up in the same place.  If there is a left-hand exit ramps paired with a left-hand on-ramp on the other side, it might qualify as the "same road".  An exception might be if the road follows the median/barrier in one direction, but has a left-hand on-ramp on the other side (as long as there's a reasonable merge area to maintain the concept of "same road".

Here's a crazy one for example (albeit not very long and not all of it is freeway):  Starting at the north end of Aberdeen, North Carolina; wrap around Raleigh; and ending at I-85 near Hillsborough, North Carolina.  Route numbering is US-1 // US-1/US-64 // I-440/US-1 // I-440 // I-440/I-87/US-64 // I-40/US-64 // I-40.  An oddity is that this route takes you on both US-64 eastbound and US-64 westbound on the Beltline around Raleigh.

Obligatory mention of the NYC line to Ripley on the NYS Thruway. NYC is even posted on east/southbound mileage signs for that entire distance.

Or Manning Avenue in Fresno County.

After roads end, do they go to heaven like all dogs?

That doesn't make any sense. Southbound at Richmond you'd be routed onto I-295, but northbound traffic at the south end of I-295 would stick to I-95. In Jacksonville, I-95 southbound went to the left while I-10 was to the right. At the east end of I-12, you'd stay with I-10. And finally, I-10 keeps left at I-110.

If you could flip I-610 in Houston upside down at one point and attach the lanes backward to create a Möbius loop, than I suppose you could.

I think complete beltways would be the exception to this, since they're just infinite loops, meaning you can drive around the city on them endlessly, though would you really want to?

Wow, it's a good thing that this thread went off the rails.  Can't believe that I did this:

Quote from: NE2 on April 28, 2025, 05:44:43 PMThat doesn't make any sense.

I still have an engraved image of the BGS for I-95 exiting to the Fuller Warren Drawbridge in Jacksonville and the straight route headed for I-10 into West Jax (both were single lanes back in the day, probably the only single lane section of I-95 remaining).  Took this every day going home from work for more than a year back in the mid-1980s.  Even worse, I'm the one who has often posted about taking the left-hand exit from I-95 southbound -to- I-295 northbound as a shortcut from I-85 to the Northeast.  :pan:

Or, do roads end *twice*? In each direction.
