Did any of you like the music of The Beach Boys? My favorite Beach Boys song was 1988's Kokomo: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kokomo_(song). The song appeared on their 1989 album Still Crusin', as well as on the soundtrack album for the 1988 movie Cocktail: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cocktail_(1988_film). Interestingly, Brian Wilson did not contribute to the song Kokomo.
I think I'm the only "Sloop John B" fan left out there.
I remember "I get around", "Help me Rhonda", "Good vibrations" and their cover of "California Dreamin" of the Mamas & the Papas.
"Pet Sounds" and "Surf's Up." That is all.
I grew up listening to their many hit songs; in fact, Kokomo came out the summer I graduated from high school! Not only that, Brian's legacy lives on through his two daughters (Carnie and Wendy), who make up two-thirds of Wilson Phillips.

This is kind of a rough week for classic rock/pop music. Sly Stone passed away a couple days ago and now Brian Wilson. It makes me worried about that tragedies come in threes thing. What other legend are we going to lose this week?
Earlier this evening when I was lifting weights at the gym I listened to the entire Pet Sounds album (via Amazon Music Unlimited). No skipping over any tracks or playing anything out of order. The latter half of the 1960's was arguably the most revolutionary period in American popular music history. Pet Sounds is one of the most groundbreaking albums of that era. That's thanks in no small part to Brian Wilson.
At this point, it's not like boomer deaths are to be unexpected. Sure, it's sad that these icons are passing away, but it's also their time, so to speak.

My first ever concert at the Minnesota State Fair in 1990 or so.
We saw Brian Wilson at the Nissan Pavilion in Virginia when he toured with Paul Simon perhaps 20 years ago or so. Unfortunately, they didn't play any songs together in the way Billy Joel and Elton John did on their joint tours. I suppose that's because of their rather different styles of music (though, when he was younger, it would have been interesting to hear Brian Wilson sing some of Art Garfunkel's higher notes). It was still a very good show and I'm glad I got to see both of them (we also later attended a Simon and Garfunkel concert at Verizon Center).
We didn't get to the Beach Boys' 50th anniversary tour because we were out of town, but it wouldn't have mattered because the only local show was on a weeknight at Merriweather Post Pavilion up near Baltimore and it just takes too darn long to get there with weeknight traffic. I don't have any interest in seeing the band now touring under the "Beach Boys" name. With none of the Wilson brothers left, it feels sort of like it's time to retire that name, though I understand the legal aspects of Mike Love having the rights to use the name and a contractual obligation to play a certain number of gigs.

For my parents, it was the drag racing/racing culture songs (Little Deuce Coop & Shut Down Vol 2) for my dad and the surfing songs for my mom (or her brothers)
Not sure which one of them bought 'Pet Sounds,' but they had a copy.
My folks had "Endless Summer" on vinyl, which I managed to destroy in my pre-teen years with less-than-graceful handling.

I debated whether this belongs in the "minor things that bother you" or "minor things that please you" thread.
I was playing the Beach Boys boxed set from 1993 while cleaning up from dinner and of course I was "singing" along. I have a horrible singing voice. Doesn't stop me from attempting karaoke "Take on Me" or seeking (and failing to find) Brian Wilson's falsetto notes.
Our cat stared at me with huge wide eyes when I started singing along with "Please Let Me Wonder" (one of their easier songs on the whole). Then she jumped down off the couch and left the room—although, interestingly, she came back during the Pet Sounds material.
I enjoyed a lot of Beach Boys, which is kind of surprising since I was never into surfing, or high school sports, or cruising, or even cars all that much. But they're happy songs that would be played at high school parties in June right before vacation started.
(And I do like John B.)
