Title: Shot to hell
Post by: Max Rockatansky on June 29, 2025, 06:26:43 PM
This one apparently with birdshot on the Kern County maintained portion of Breckenridge Road.  Interestingly this sign seems to be made of steel for some reason:

That's funny. The first thing I saw when I opened this page was the picture, and I thought "I saw something like that on Breckenridge Road once."

By the way, since that's a recent shot, did they fix the cave-in along that road?

^ That happens a lot in Alaska. Was common for route markers to be used for target practice in rural areas, until the state DOT limited posting of route markers to high-traffic places like major junctions.

Wouldn't be surprised if a bunch of loudmouthed, hot-tempered Yosemite Sam wannabes kept shooting up those signs. Given the warning at the bottom of the sign in the OP, were any of the shooters ever caught?

Considering how remote of territory I was on along Breckenridge Road I doubt it.  That is about as lawless of a land you're likely to find in California.

There were a crapload of big green signs that have suffered gunshot wounds on the Mountain Parkway in Kentucky. KYTC has replaced some, but not all, of them in recent years. And yes, the replacements have taken a few bullets since they were installed.

Heh.  Ny relatives in deep Floyd County would say the real hillbillies lived out by the Mountain Parkway... :D

While not the worst in the grand scheme of things for this thread, I find it hilarious that "SunPass" was the note that got the most damage...

It would have been hella funny if it actually was Arkansas state highway 15.

I think if Alaska 47 existed it would would be just as funny.

And of course, it's been shot to bits.

Or perhaps it's actually just scattered button copy. Who's to say?

If you project the light upon the sign, it gives the constellation Wayfarer, but it's only visible when the late evening sun shines on the 38th of February.

Nice to see an Alanland reference on my first day back here, heh.

This well-perforated shield was posted near the Malheur Wildlife Refuge, which was infamously occupied by the armed militants back in 2016.  However, this is not their handiwork, as I took this photo way back in 2002.

It was subsequently replaced with an erroneous US shield, which did not spare it from further assault:

And the barrage continued up to the present day (well, last October, at least):

There's also this thoroughly shot-up "no target shooting" sign (http://www.alaskaroads.com/no-target-shooting-sign-large.jpg), in a rest area southeast of Anchorage.

Maybe the guy riding shotgun accidentally fired because the driver went into a skid.

Or was just frustrated with how bad the paved portion in Tuolumne County was and took it out on a Stanislaus County placed signed.  Rock River might be the largest variance in terms of road maintenance from one county to the next I've seen in a long time.

Gun control saves lives, by preventing damage to highway warning signs.
