Title: So when is YouTube going to fix its video size?
Post by: bandit957 on August 08, 2025, 10:21:35 AM
I think this has been broken now since 2018. When you use a home computer (not a smartphone), videos on YouTube appear much too big, especially if it's a low-resolution video.

When is YouTube going to finally fix this?

Mine looks fine.

My son, who is a budding gaming designer, just had a similar discussion yesterday.  The old-fashioned answer is that "all programs should reach out to the 'terminal' to grab the pixel dimensions of its current display screen and adjust the resolution and centering of the imagery sent over IP".  The modern-day approach is that the App depends on the user's computer to adjust the image properly, and when it doesn't, the user has to reconfigure the display on their own device (and then readjust back afterwards).  Doesn't make a lick of sense.

App designers see this as a compatibility problem that they don't want to keep up with.  I see it as a simple math problem.  I wasn't a software developer, but still got the pleasure of doing this kind of work on a occasional basis.  One program that we developed pulled in GIS mapping coordinates for any train network, then adjusted the GIS coordinates according to current screen size.  Fairly simple math.

It's also worth noting that the purpose of YouTube has shifted from "site where amateurs submit short video clips at whatever quality they can manage" to "streaming service that outsources content creation to its users".  While the older paradigm still exists, their bread and butter is professional content creators using it as their platform.  As such, it's based around longer, higher quality videos than it once was.

Way too often I click on the full screen button and despite the video being the perfect size, it shoves a horizontal scroll bar on the bottom of the screen, ruining the viewing experience.

Yes, I hate this too. There are U-Block extensions that will get rid of it, though.

This filter should work:
youtube.com##body, ytd-app[scrolling]:style(overflow-x: hidden !important;)

I'm more worried about if/when the British age-access verification rules will be reaching YT on this side of the 'Pond' . . .   :-o

Honestly, part of me wonders if this obsession with age verification is just a way for them to track who's browsing what online.  The Supreme Court (the US one, that is) is even claiming that there's no right to anonymously view explicit media.  They're basically outright saying at this point that nobody has any right to privacy.

Also worth noting that Google's already testing out trying to estimate ages through watch history, so those of us who like to keep that disabled are likely to have problems down the line.

That is EXACTLY what it is. It's also a way to censor LGBTQ+ content online by lumping it in with the actual things they want to control.

What sucks for YouTube is that I follow like, two guys on there, and pretty much the only other thing I use it for is a glitchy version of FM radio. If they start getting ideas, they are laughably easy for me to replace.

Getting a foot into the door, probably ultimate goal is fully de-anonimised social media.

Same for me.  I honestly don't even know what the OP is talking about.

Years ago, the YouTube player used to display at a fixed 360-pixel vertical size (or 480, if one selected the larger player), or at least that's how it behaved for me. I don't remember exactly when it changed, but nowadays the player is sized based on the browser window size and video streams are scaled up or down to fit. My personal solution is using YouTube in a windowed browser, sized so that the viewport dimensions given in "Stats for nerds" stay at a 480-pixel vertical size. Matching the viewport size to a standard video size avoids unnecessary scaling of videos where that standard size is an option.

It's this, but on the whole screen (as you can see by the little icon at the bottom right):

Yeah, I don't recall having had that issue a single time, and a desktop or laptop computer is the only way I've watched YouTube videos for several years now.  Haven't owned a smartphone for quite some time.  No problems on my end.

And now YouTube has ruined this too. Now it scales videos even when you size your browser.
