Title: Farthest latitude and longitude you've driven
Post by: Bruce on September 11, 2025, 01:28:46 AM
Spinning off the other thread to ask how far you've driven.

And a bonus for the longest you've driven in your own vehicle, or on a contiguous network from your home.

My stats:

Overall
North: Chilkoot State Park, AK (59.336, -136.563)
East: Montreal, QC (45.4821, -73.5477)
South: Tulum, QR (20.1870, -87.4434)
West: Chilkoot State Park, AK (59.336, -136.563)

Own vehicle
North: Horseshoe Bay, BC (49.3745, -123.2742)

I construe "driving" to mean just that, i.e., not including travel as a passenger (like in a cab or similar).

Using coordinates determined from Google Maps.

My own car (including cars belonging to my wife, in the case of "West," as I did all the driving on that trip):
North—Somewhere along Bay St. Lawrence Road on Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia. Approximately 46.900558 N, 60.524574 W. (I'm not sure exactly where we decided not to go further and turned around.)
West—An on-ramp just past the western end of I-64 in Missouri. 38.812122 N, 90.852501 W. (We were on a trip to St. Louis and I was turning around after finishing the I-64 clinch.)
East—Along the Marconi Trail on Cape Breton Island en route from Glace Bay to Louisbourg at that road's easternmost point. Approximately 46.167316 N, 59.870697 W.
South—Somewhere in Coral Gables, Florida. I'm not sure exactly where we decided to turn around, but it was somewhere around the Coconut Grove area. Approximately 25.740007 N, 80.237849 W. (I think the actual southern point was somewhere south of there because I recall going through some local streets when we turned around, but I don't remember which ones.)

Any vehicle:
North—Along the A91 approaching St. Andrews, Scotland. 56.359878 N, 2.900620 W.
West—Along a curve on Koke'e Road in Kekaha, Hawaii. Approximately 21.981626 N, 159.718124 W.
East—Passing along the east side of the Heathrow Interchange on the M4 in England. Approximately 51.495928 N, 0.452413 W.
South—The parking for the ruins at Tulum in Mexico. Approximately 20.218329 N, 87.437416 W.

I drove to the North Cape in my own car in 2023. That's 71°10′21″N. It was a mega road trip of over 9,000 kilometers through Scandinavia.

The North Cape is the northernmost accessible road on a continuous road network.

If you want to go even farther north, you'd need to fly to Svalbard, where paved, public roads are around 78 N. There is car traffic in and around of Longyearbyen.

Own vehicle (driven from home):

North - Prudhoe Bay AK, lat=70.206508 (measured at north end of Dalton Highway, but may've driven a few miles north of there)

South - Key West FL, lat=24.546571 ("southernmost point" buoy, which isn't the actual southernmost point)

West - Anchor Point AK, lon=-151.866975

East - Cape Spear, Newfoundland, lon=-52.624104 (took a ferry from Nova Scotia, to get me and my car to Newfoundland)

Rental car:

West = Unalaska AK, lon=-166.597431 (west end of Captains Bay Rd.)

East: easternmost point of M25 motorway in England, lon=0.290322

South: South Point parking lot on Hawaii's Big Island, lat=18.920118

I said in my post, Hawaii. Kauai island specifically.

For some reason I thought you were listing Hawaii as your southern boundary, not your western boundary.

South would probably be Tijuana. Never left the continent.

Contiguous roads, I mean. Which means for Alaska, Arctic Circle sign. Had to fly to Barrow. Haven't driven to Deadhorse yet, but I might this upcoming trip.

That's because he did.  But it was an error on his part because, as he said, he sometimes gets latitude and longitude mixed up.

At any rate, he still hasn't told us what line of longitude is his westernmost, which is what I assumed you were actually asking him.

I don't know longitude offhand. It would be the closest ones to Kawaii. Went there in the late 90s.

Here are my bounds...

North: 37.0616, -94.4261,  I-44/49 interchange, Joplin, MO
South: 27.5803, -82.5709,  I-275/US 19 interchange near Palmetto, FL
East: 28.7748, -82.0865,  I-75 near Coleman, FL
West: 32.8154, -106.2696,  White Sands NP, NM

All of that was done in my trusty 2016 Honda CR-V.

For me it's as follows:
North: Place du Fer at Cheval, Toulouse, department no. 31 (Haute Garonne), France; 43.5923
South: Gas station on N-340 outside Lorca, Murcia, Spain; 37.6899
East: Exit 24 of A620, Toulouse, department no. 31 (Haute Garonne), France; 1.4410
West: Parking lot of the Ibis hotels at Oviedo, Asturias, Spain; -5.8493

All done with my own (family) car, however only the Southermost point is connected to home entirely on roads I've driven. And yes, I've never driven to e.g. Barcelona (yet).

Generally, though, that's not the type of person who has been out of the country.  |CoreySamson| recently shared a report of his church trip to Mexico, but he hasn't been north of Joplin.  That's what I find unusual.  But I suppose age probably plays a big role in that.

Kansas City is underrated as a vacation destination.  Good food, good museums, pro sports, casinos.  Certainly not Chicago level but, if you run out of things to do, then you're doing it wrong.  Probably the only thing missing is a real riverfront entertainment area.  The museums are where it's really at:  especially the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and the WWI Museum.  If you're interested in church history (and I know you are), there's also the Spurgeon Center and library.  Plus a few roadgeeking opportunities, including (1) the bridge to nowhere (https://maps.app.goo.gl/LH5HzFyj4ZCuCXwc8) and (2) what used to be the tunnel to nowhere (https://maps.app.goo.gl/pDzMXd8xZbjVhqRg8) but now goes somewhere (https://maps.app.goo.gl/ExzKiSfMhLNJ2P478).

And I look forward to seeing you here in Wichita next year.

Hey, if anyone at the Wichita meet wants to attend my church on Sunday morning, I could introduce you to the guy who designed that 87th Street bridge over I-35 (assuming he's in town that week).  He was part of the last meet here, but that was a dozen years ago.

(Coordinates were determined by coarse eyeballing with Google Maps)

Farthest I has driven my own car (contiguous network from my house is the same):
North:  Latitude = 45.56    near Hawkesbury ON (actually junction of routes 17 and 417)
South:  Latitude = 27.94    Tampa FL
East:  Longitude = -68.20    Bar Harbor ME
West:  Longitude = -89.75    Slidell LA

Farthest I has driven any car (e.g. personal or rental):
North:  Latitude = 66.05    Húsavik, Iceland
South:  Latitude = 27.58    Rubonia FL
East:  Longitude =  -13.99    Breiðdalsvík, Iceland
West:  Longitude = -122.48    San Francisco CA

Other personal extremes:
North:  Latitude = 66.55    Arctic Circle(*) near Grímsey, Iceland (by plane and by foot)
South:  Latitude = 24.55    Key West FL (was passenger in car)

(*) At least to where the marker was placed.  Apparently the Arctic Circle tends to drift as the Earth wobbles
