Title: There's Something A Little Amiss About These Gantrys...
Post by: thenetwork on September 24, 2025, 11:57:34 AM
This is an example of one of many older gantries that are along I-70 between Denver and Idaho Springs.

What has caught my eye in the last year or so was that CDOT has "retrofitted" this particular style of gantry with industrial "chains" holding the gantry to the post on either side.

I am wondering if this is a band-aid approach to prolonging the life of the gantry, if there are known recent structural problems that caused an emergency retrofit to these gantrys, or something else?

Bottom line:  It just don't look right!

Does look a bit scary. If a gantry had fallen off onto the roadway, it probably would have shown up in some forum thread, so it may be that they discovered one gantry getting loose, and fixing it in time, but deciding to preempt the problem with these chains. Maybe someone around here from Colorado DOT knows?

It's just a reminder for the traction law that just began its enforcement period. :)

Maybe similar to chains installed as a "just in case" on signals attached to span wires.

I may be wrong, but those chains don't look like they can hold a gantry up for too long, which is why the state has moved on to monotubes in recent years, especially in Denver.

And Utah as well.
