Title: ND To NJ
Post by: SteveG1988 on October 24, 2010, 10:47:31 AM
Hey i am going to be heading from ND to NJ, one way trip, and i would like some pointers on if the routing i am planning has construction

I-29 to I-94 in fargo (construction but it is the only really good way to do the trip, and the one lane sections where the road is all on one side is 65, only 10 MPH less than the normal highway) 94 through MN,WI, down to I-39 then onto I-90 in IL, taking the chicago skyway to the indiana toll road. Sticking on 90/80 through IN,OH and departing it for I-76 in Ohio, through PA where i stick on the PA turnpike, stopping in breezewood, and continuing on later that day to the Delaware Valley Exit on the PA turnpike so i can take US-13 to PA-413 and then NJ-413. Ending up home off CR-541.

Long trip but it can be fun. Anybody know any stuff that is neat along that routing other than the abandoned PA turnpike which i will be biking.

Hersheypark I would recommend to anybody (if your heading that way). It is also beside the Zoo America, that I have visited only once.\
EDIT: Also, I forgot to mention, if you're going to hersheypark via Interstate 83, watch for traffic during business days

I'd recommend the abandoned PA 29 freeway just off US 202 west of Valley Forge, one of the stops on the recent Philly meet.  You can also see part of it from the PA 29 overpass just west of 202.

I-90/94 goes past Wisconsin Dells, WI, which is tourist trap central for the upper Midwest and is actually pretty interesting (with oodles of motel rooms available) during the off-season.

Also, you could get off the Ohio Turnpike (I-80/90) at I-280 (Toledo East) and check out the new I-280 Maumee River bridge - an AWESOME cable-stayed structure that replaced an earlier drawbridge.  The old drawspan is still there and in use, though, now as a local street.  Then turn around, recross that bridge and make a lunch/dinner stop at Tony Packo's (just off of the KEWL ramps at the south end of that bridge and then east a couple of blocks) - a Toledo 'must do'.

Enjoy!

Mike

MGK, i am not a fan of cable stayed bridges, too cookie cutter. But i will see about heading into toledo ohio. I plan on stopping in Phoenix Ville PA to see the theatre the original Blob from 1958 was made. I was thinking of doing 76 through philly, but the Shurekill expressway is scary from what i have heard.

PTC Construction Advisories (http://www.paturnpike.com/improve/conschedule.aspx)

Turnpike Reconstruction Zones (http://www.pahighways.com/toll/tpkreconstruction)

If you take Exit 110 - Somerset, you can see the Quecreek Mine Rescue (http://www.pahighways.com/features/quecreek.html) site and Flight 93 Memorial (http://www.pahighways.com/features/shanksville.html).  From there, I would suggest going north and take the Lincoln Highway east to Breezewood if you have time.  Although the Ship Hotel is gone, the view (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Schellsburg,+PA&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=32.38984,79.013672&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Schellsburg,+Bedford,+Pennsylvania&ll=40.037242,-78.758733&spn=0.007639,0.01929&z=16&layer=c&cbll=40.037331,-78.758672&panoid=iDujBWoOMKpJJidny9VMdA&cbp=12,57.43,,0,5) of seven counties and three states remain.

Fat Jimmy's Outfitters (http://www.fatjimmys.com/index.php?page=rentals) in Bedford is the closest place that rents bikes.

Aiee, cannot fit a bike into my car, having to move all my stuff via a compact sedan is not fun. I guess i will have to hike the trail.

I know a few folks who have one of these and they love them:
http://www.amazon.com/SportRack-Eurotrio-Trunk-Mount-Carrier/dp/B000UUK0CI

It's a bike rack that mounts onto your trunk.

Since the reason to rent a bike in Breezewood is to bike the abandoned Turnpike section, I'd recommend bringing a light (it'll be dark in the middle of the tunnels), but I'd also suggest beginning at the EAST end of the abandoned section (on Pump Station Rd).  That way, you'll have most of the downhill on the return leg.  Starting at Breezewood, you'd be mostly uphill on the return trip.

Wish I knew about Tony Packo's when I was out photographing and videotaping the bridge!  I know Tim would go for the BUNKER BUSTER COMBO.

Packo's was the site of the last Toledo meet, and there may have been a prior one there as well. Of course that venue was made famous by Jamie Farr on MASH. Plus I remember seeing all the autographed hot dog buns on one of the food or travel shows years ago.

I believe it's been the location of every Toledo Meet.  The first one was held there as was the one in 2003.

Definitely going to head into Toledo, good place to stop for lunch/dinner before making the joureny into PA. Best part of this trip, i do not have to pay tolls, becuse i get reembursed for them later on.

No WONDER you're on all those toll roads!  So then why not go for it and cross on the PA/NJ Tpk. anyway? I'm sure you've seen 413 enough.

I completed the trip, I did not stop anywhere other than Eau Claire, South bend, and then straight through to NJ from there. I just wanted to get home towards the end, breezewood would have been nice, but a waste of cash to stop there, when i was just a few hours away.
