Title: Route 66 Turns 100; Celebration Planned in Springfield, MO
Post by: ITB on April 15, 2026, 09:07:49 PM
This years marks the 100th anniversary of Route 66. Here's an in-depth article (https://www.nytimes.com/2026/04/14/arts/design/route-66-centennial-museum-exhibits.html), published yesterday in The New York Times, about the road and the role it played in the American imagination.

In Springfield, MO, a Route 66 centennial celebration is scheduled to kick off in two weeks. Read more about it here (https://www.route66kickoff.com/).

Paywalled and I don't really care to do a workaround.  I will say though that US 66 from Santa Fe westward co-opts much of what was made special by the National Old Trails Road.  Oatman Highway is really the only thing that was more truly 66 versus Auto Trail.  Kind of shame that these big news agencies don't really care to cover some of the other big US Routes or overall system.

Ugh, I forgot all about the paywall. My apologies.

I agree, US 66 continues to get all the attention, even though it died at age 58 and will never actually turn 100.  Meanwhile, there are over 100 other US routes (https://www.usends.com/highways/centennial) that truly will celebrate their 100th birthday in November.

Also, if your browser has a "reader mode," with the little page icon in the address bar, you can use that.  The text is there, it's just covered up.  The reader mode tells the browser to display the text without all of the other stuff, including the command to cover it up, and also ads, which is nice.

This ought to be US 91's time in the sun, which has a similar lost-highway thing going on as US 66 and US 99, but will in fact technically make it to 100.

Good point, and I would say US 10, US 16, and US 80 are similar, in the sense that all four routes have been truncated by over 1000 miles, yet some portion of each still survives.

91 and the Arrowhead Trail have gotten a lot of attention on our page.  The Mojave has some phenomenal relic highway stuff if you know where to look.
