I just saw some show on the History Channel about the making of the Al-Can highway, apparently it also connects 6 Canadian airports. I think that would be a fun drive.
It's definitely needed.
oh it already exists, it was made shortly before WWII.
No I know that...but I'm saying that it is defintely needed. Going to places like Alaska would suck without it.
I'm not entirely sure it would be possible to get to Alaska by automobile without it
Ferries. :colorful:
Well, without it traveling to many places would be almost impossible.
I drove the entire Alcan highway in the summer of 2005. My daughter is a college student in Alaska, and we drove all the way from Atlanta to take her car up there, before I flew back home. Along that roadway, we had to wait for a heard of buffalo to cross the road in northern British Columbia, saw numerous other wildlife and unfogettable scenery. It is a unique and worthwile trip for anybody to take. The entire road is paved and there are places to stop along the way, especially in the larger towns. I recommend it highly. One warning for any driver----------watch for potholes. The subartic climate puts lots of stress on the pavement.
One more thing. I took numerous digital photos along the roadway on that trip. Some of the roadway itself, and many of the scenery and even some of the wildlife. Sometime in the future, I may post, or pass them on for somebody else to post, if the Alaska or Alcan highway is ever included for coverage on the aaroads website in general.
I saw Jim Teresco's 2001 chronicle when he took the trip. That was some really impressive scenery, especially as you got into the Canadian Rockies.
I still wish the Yukon Territory would renumber its section of the highway so Alaska could have a U.S. Highway (though then we'd need to figure out some way to give Hawaii one...hmm...).

As do I. I'd love to see US 97 up in Alaska.

I spotted on Youtube, a vintage Chevrolet ad set on the Alcan/Alaska highway, you got some interesting vintage views of how the Alaska highway looked once http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YfpqwAQ2nuw (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YfpqwAQ2nuw)

US 97 is signed in Alaska, but only in the UAF Museum, as of 2001:

If you have a chance to make the ride, do it!
Sorry to dust-off this topic :hmmm: but I spotted this vintage ad of Chevy trucks running on the Alaska/Alcan highway
I'm always amazed at how campy those '50s ads are. :-D
Campy and more entertaining than most ads today!
