Title: Posted Secret SR numbers in Florida
Post by: jwolfer on December 28, 2010, 01:17:20 PM
Sorry no pics of this yet.  But here in Jacksonville there a couple of posted secret SR numbers with US highways.  Its not like GA where all of them are posted at least at reassurance signs.

2 Jax examples

-On Beach Blvd(US 90) at SR9A there are reassurance signs that show US 90/ SR 212
-On I-295 at US 17 in Orange Park the BGS on the Southbound side show US 17/SR 15  ( i have seen pics of this one somwhere online but i dont have time to look now)

Any other instances that are visible around Florida.  I am assuming that the contractor made signs based on legal descriptions of the SR number and perhaps they work in GA where the Secret SR is signed

Palm Beach County consistently posts the state road counterparts of U.S. highways. Not many instances come to mind in other parts of the state, and if they do, they are more of goofs than anything else.

One instance was signed with a keys shield and maintained with the signage replacement:

The FL 30 shield is still in place today.

Over in Carrabelle, US 98 reassurance shields sign instead show the hidden FL 30 designation at the Carrabelle River.

Probable goofs:
-FL 55 is posted in Chiefland, just south of the Alt US 27 split.
-Two FL 369 shields posted going northbound on FL 369 at the (remodeled) FL 61 split, just south of Tallahassee.
-At least one FL 261 shield posted with a US 319 reassurance on Capital Circle.
-FL 25 gets co-signed with US 27 south of South Bay.
-FL 7 shows up on LGS overheads at Broward County surface-street intersections.

Not really a secret route, but a state road short enough to not be signed yet is signed is FL 500A in Tavares. And there's the very short signed section of FL 45 in Tampa, with no overlying US Route.

SR 700 in Brooksville is a good example of a short signed segment of an unsigned route. SR 5 in Lake Worth is a little longer.

On US 90 in Jacksonville, SR 10 is consistently signed beginning at the US 1 split rather than the place SR 10 leaves and SR 212 begins.

Along Conners Highway north of Port Myacca: I remember this one going up around mid-1997, when come of the bridge culverts were being modified. this pic is from 2008.

Many of the locals use SR 15 on postal addresses along this route, although few maps show it, and few signs exist. The SR 700 is also used standalone, from my experience, where US 98 was recently re-routed away to multiplex with US 441 from the diagonal route bordering the Palm Beach Canal, which terminates at Canal Point.

Indian River County uses "US1 / SR-5" regularly along street signs. I'll go dig up street view pictures later today when I'm a bit less busy at work.

I've also noticed that contractors at construction sites will sometimes slip in a state route reference. There was some construction on 192 in Melbourne not too long ago and all of the VMS signs said something to the effect of "Construction ahead on SR500 - expect delays".

Here's a picture of FL-5 being signed with US-17.

There's a Florida 200 posted on US 301 somewhere north of Ocala where it normally isn't, but I've never managed to remember where it is well enough to grab a picture when we pass it until it's too late.

It is signed with A1A between Yulee and Callahan, but I don't think it's supposed to be "secret" up there.

I should also note that typically the Florida Highway Patrol uses these "hidden" SR designations on citations, rather the Interstate name.

I've paid the price a few times in past to verify that.  :p

Nope Jim, not "secret" in that area.  They even sign it on the BGS's on I-95 @ Exit #373. ;)

They do the same thin in GA.  My mom got pulled over on I-95 once and the 'local' guy used the SR 405 number on the ticket...

I've seen SR 400 signs on some blue construction funding signs along I-4 in Florida. I've also seen an overhead SR 400 sign on another road passing under I-4, which I think was along the Turnpike probably.

I've also seen maps from FDOT as well as other organizations making maps and have seen the Turnpike signed with a Toll SR 91 shield.

In Jasper, FL there are shields of FL 100 at the north end of the two route multiplex and on SB US 129 after entering the state from GA!  Where US 129 gets free from  US 41 there is a FL 100 shield and south of the state line.  FL 100 goes from the US 129 entry into FL to Flagler Beach!  After its signed route from FL A1A in Flagler to US 90 in Lake City, it goes secret with US 90 in Lake City and then North on US 41 with another secret route FL 25 to US 129 then to the border.

alpsroads.net has a photo on his page of this assembly in Jasper
