The thing about that US 60 photo that I posted isn't necessarily the shield shape, which is commonly seen around Kentucky these days (the US 23 sign posted upthread is a good example) but the garishly large numbers.

That looks suspiciously like a Rhode Island sign.
That lead-off US-322 sign IS horrible (and variants can be found sporadically around the state). Though a pic or 2 down, the one with two 322 shields overhead doesn't look all that bad.

that I-84 is quite the rarity - a '57 spec shield in Connecticut. It happens to be a bit worn. But it's not ugly at all.
This style is, sadly, rather common in certain areas of south Florida:

I've seen the southern style in Tennessee and Virginia as well, and - of all places - Wisconsin.
For a while in the late 90's/early 00's, Ohio had a slew of real fugly US-224 signs along it's route from Lodi to Findlay. And I think US 250 got the ugly stick treatment as well in that same part of the state. Never got a pic of them, though.

that 385 on the right does look a bit goofy, but is standard '70 spec. the 385 on the left and the 287 are classic '61 spec! Glad to see those are still there. I saw that gantry in 2006.

MY EYES! HOW THEY BURN! X-(
That's worse than some of the mishappen ones above.
That's pretty horrid. An ugly '70 shield using Helvetica, I think.
I know Clearview isn't popular around here but at least it doesn't look nearly as bad.
And they didn't even kern it properly. The 3 and the 6 only seem vaguely related.
I'm not sure if that is the default kerning of the typeface, but it does look a bit wide. I found that when working with U.S. Route shields, I tend to have a kerning of -37.5, as it makes the numbers look a little tighter and just gives it a more balance appearance.
I actually think that US 36 shield looks kind of cool.

It reminds me of something out of a video game. If the kerning were better, I could almost like it.
On US-3 south in Mass there's a shield that is appx 48" tall, with a 3 that's only about 1-1.5' tall. It looks terribly disproportionate. I'll try to get a photo of it at some point.
My eyes! The goggles do nothing! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=juFZh92MUOY)
Even the border on the auxiliary isn't done properly. The radii should vary on each edge of the border, since the outer edge is further from the focii (Should be cocentric). This mistake makes the rounded corners look awkward.
