So you see I have been to a lot of places and have traveled many roads! So, what are your favorite non-interstate highways?
I.C.
Highway 29 in California. I was born in Napa and I love the highway up the Napa valley.
CT-9.
Whenever I'm up in Connecticut I really do enjoy traveling on their state limited-access highways, and 9's my favorite, probably because of the scenery, the locations it goes to (Hartford and Essex), and the oddity that is the one signal-controlled at-grade intersection in a very tight place.
Second would have to be VA-168/NC-168/US-158/NC-12, which is the road from my city of Hampton, VA to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. It's a toll limited-access highway almost all the way to the state line, then 4 lanes with a shared left turn lane all the way to the Wright Memorial Bridge across the sound, joining with US-158 around the halfway mark. Then south of Nags Head once on the barrier island, NC-12 branches off, a 2-lane road with passing (though now there's too much traffic to pass even in non-peak months) that leads down for miles to all the beaches and little towns. I never get tired of those trips, though they're only little 2-hour or so ones.
US-26/Sunset Highway in West Portland strangely
M39 in Detroit, because its so urban, even if the cops are strict on the stretch through dearborn..55mph means 50
M14 in Ann Arbor,MI - very windy, with roundabout junctions which I love :)

U.S. 15 is a fantastic ride leading north from Williamsport into New York. The ride along the Susquehanna is pretty nice too, especially with all of the upgrades of the 1990s (before that it was a three lane road with a suicide lane that was terrible).
Delaware 92? Naamans Road, you like that?!
Delaware 1 was a great road when it opened, but its so overridden with commuters now on the north side and the beach traffic is amazing during the warm months. They have state troopers that set up on the north approach to the Canal Bridge now too!
Ick... Delaware 1. I don't understand why anyone takes it anyway. US-13's more direct, IMHO. And DE-1's tolled!

Ya! It has rare Delaware traffic signal sun visor backplates! Which BTW, I found some Delaware sun visor backplates on US 202 at the Blue Ball construction area!

My favorite non-interstate highway is Minnesota Highway #169. It travels north to south up to Brainerd and goes all the way down into Iowa.

I've always been a big fan of US Highway 20, as the very first old sign I remember noticing (in 1986) was on Comm Ave in Massachusetts, about a block from the eastern end. A black square US 20 with the old-style Massachusetts font. The shield dates back to the 1970s.
this being Mass. - the sign is still there to this very day.
I also like US 6, US 395, MSR 200, and any state route 62 (esp. Mass and CA)
For scenic reasons, these three stand out for me:
- US 50, NV/CA 28, and CA 88 near Lake Tahoe.
- NV 159 through Red Rock Canyon
- UT-9 around Zion Nat'l Park
For pure nostalgia, and many roadgeek-related memories, my favorite has to be US 95 in NW Las Vegas.
UT-9 is an excellent road! I forgot to mention that, and UT-95 as well. Utah has some very lovely scenic highways. UT-24 comes to mind as well, and also US-163 heading into Monument Valley.
for a more international flavor, I really like E6 in northern Norway.
US 101 in Oregon/California

My favorites:
CT 9 for the reasons mentioned earlier...
US 6...it is fun driving 6 from Ohio to Connecticut like i did this last September....
US 50 between Montrose and Pueblo, CO, US 287 between I-35W and I-40 in Texas, and LA 1 for practically its entire distance.

I have other favorites, but I don't have any pictures of them. :P
Some of my favorites.
US 44 in northwest Ct. and NY. Salisbury Ct. may be the best small town I've ever visited.
US 6 in NY and Pa.
US 209 in NY and Pa.
US 11 in NY.
US 7 in Vermont.
NY 28, a great trip through the Catskills.
NY 97 north of Port Jervis as it hugs the Delaware.
Pa. 115 from I 80 to Wilkes Barre.
NY 55 west of Liberty. Nice old signs in this area.
NY 293. Amazingly desolate area in southern NY through the military camp areas.
Maryland Route 657. It's just so delightfully crappy that it has a special place in my heart.
I don't have any particular favorite road - all undiscovered roads are a treat to me.
There are some beautful "backroad" state highways out in the Sugarcane Empire west and south of Baton Rouge, and also many gorgeous roads out in the rice prairies of southwest La.
This is referring to the scenery. The roads themselves, no surprise, are generally substandard in quality.
My favorite non-interstate highway is US- 441. I like it and believe it or not... i live right off the 441.
Georgia 400 (T. Harvey Mathis/Turner McDonald Parkways): Got to be on your toes on this freeway. Folks are crazy, and I love it (lol).
Georgia 166 (Arthur Langford Parkway): Dangerous freeway. The reason being is that the entrance ramps to 166 are too short to merge safely. Regardless of this fact, it's still a nice, sweeping ride.
US 78/Georgia 10/410 (Stone Mountain Freeway): Nice view of the granite mound, known as Stone Mountain.
Georgia 316 (University Parkway): Nice rural drive. Too many traffic lights. Should've been a full freeway from I-85 to Paul Broun Parkway (Georgia 10).
My favorite non-interstate highway is California 56...very enormous change since I was like 7 or 8 years old. Alignment locations are from I-5 (exit 33B) near Del Mar, California to I-15 (exit 19) near Poway, California.
It was used be divided 2 lanes (1x1) expressway on CA 56 freeway from October 1988 to October 1992 as blacktop roadway for 1 mile from Exit 8 Rancho Penasquitos Blvd to Exit 9 Interstate 15. Then in about August 1991, the CA-56 freeway construction was started from Exit 8 to Exit 9 as 1 mile. As the way to built the new divided 4 lanes whitetop freeway until July 2nd, 1993. Then in October 1992, the interim 2 lanes (1x1) whitetop freeway opened on existing eastbound lane, as I remember little bit about it had temporary K-rail from Exit 8 to Exit 9. The temporary K-rail removed in very early summer, I guess. Then in July 2nd 1993, the 4 lanes whitetop freeway opened up from Exit 7 Black Mountain Road to Exit 9 I-15. In almost two years later, the CA 56 freeway opened in Carmel Valley area as all exits are 1A, 1B, and 1C in March 1995 blacktop divided freeway due sensitive beach soil. In week of March 17th or 24th, 2003, the extra 1 mile alignment of CA 56 freeway opened from Exit 6 Camino Del Sur to Exit 7 Black Mountain Road as whitetop freeway. On July 19th, 2004, the final leg of CA 56 freeway opened up from Exit 1C Carmel Country Road to Exit 6 Camino Del Sur as 4 lanes whitetop freeway as coincides placing the new exit numbering signage in the SAME day for all exits in CA 56 freeway alignment from I-5 to I-15.

When I first saw this topic, I thought "US 15"!
You're right, it is a nice drive (especially the portion from Williamsport to Painted Post).
Here's (http://www.frontiernet.net/~rochballparks4/route15/route15.htm) a page with one of my favorite sections, the Steam Valley area southbound lanes (the original local road)

You'd love every signalized road in Oregon, then. Those are actually the predominant design here by far.
Now back on topic . . .
My all-time favorite has to be US-97, followed by US-197. I'd also put US-395 on there as well. Me likey desert highways. As far as state routes, OR-47 and OR-99W would go on the list. And though I've yet to drive it, OR-140. And up in Washington, I'd say WA-14 through the Gorge. Really fun to drive.
-Alex (Tarkus)
I'll go with...
1) CT-8 from Bridgeport to Waterbury
2) Beltway 8 around Houston
3) US-78 Stone Mountain Freeway outside Atlanta (freeway I live closest to)
4) US-59 in Houston
5) US-75 Dallas (lower level of the "High Five")
6) US-17 Charleston SC (Including The Ravenel Bridge)
7) US-3 New Hampshire
8) US-302 New Hampshire
9) US-50 Maryland
10) OH-7 from Martins Ferry to Steubenville Ohio
US 211 in Virginia
UT 9 between I-15 and Zion
CT 9 freeway
US 22 between Ebensburg and Altoona
I like TN 12 from Clarksville to the Briley Parkway at Nashville.
My personal favorites:
U.S. 22/322 north of Harrisburg, PA, and watching the improvements over the last 30 years. I recall reconstruction of the original Susquehanna River bridge -- used to be a traffic light on the PA 147 side, if I recall.
U.S. 89 in northern Arizona.
U.S. 163 through Monument Valley, AZ and UT.
U.S. 1 in the Florida Keys.
MN 61's entire length: Duluth to Grand Portage. Also I love US 1 from Fort Kent to Bath, Maine, and ME 11 from Fort Kent to I-95.

Actually MN 169 is the "MN" extension of US 169 from Virginia to just east of Ely. US 169 doesn't go to Brainerd either; it runs from Virginia to the Iowa border via Lake Mille Lacs's west side, Princeton, Elk River, western Twin Cities suburbs, and Mankato. I'm not trying to be a troll, just trying to help.
My favorite would be back way to my house back in the states, CA-138 fron Cajon Pass (I-15) to Crestline. CA -18 from CA-138 East to Big Bear is nice too. The only bad part of that road is the Section below Crestline to Arrowhead Highlands, known locally as the Narrows. When it gets closed all the detour traffic gets sent down my street. Talk about traffic. :ded:
I like U.S. 49 through the DeSoto National Forest, as well as S.R. 67 in north Harrison County, Mississippi.
Be well,
Bryant

booyah! I-70 in all its red-rock snow-cap not-a-single-car-for-miles morning glory.
and my favorite highway ... as you can imagine by my avatar and all, it is none other than US Route 395, especially in California.

the Trona Road. Coming out of Kramer's Junction (US-395 and US-466 in southern California), two roads diverge just north of that intersection - one to Independence and one to Trona. The road to Independence (current US 395, built around 1931) was built much later than the road to Trona (1910s Trona Highway), which never quite became a US route as the mines dried up.

behold the diamond-ring halo, just a few hours after the previous picture, from around Lake Walker (boundary of California and Nevada). I'm not even gonna begin to tell you where this old guide sign is, so that you don't even comprehend the notion of stealing it! It's not very far from 395 in northern California ... that's all you will know!

here is US 395 in Oregon; about three seconds after I decelerated to come across a speed trap that my spider senses had somehow presciently detected: I must've been going at least 120 down this straight section, before slowing to 49 because of a disturbance in the force ... then, when away and past the yawning, donut-munching entity, back up to 120 again!

this isn't US-395 (it sure is close, in Washington, not too many miles away) but I still like this picture, so you can have at it too ....
Awesome photos, agentsteel53.
US 395 is a great road top to bottom. Haven't driven it all the way.... yet.

MA 114
MA/NH 125
For me, it'd likely be US Route 20 from between Pittsfield, MA and into Columbia County, NY, to the southeast of Albany.
OH 32 from Cincinnati to Belpre, OH. Low traffic volumes and scenery variety with a 60 mph speed limit.
US 35 from Dayton, OH to I-64 in WV. Again, low traffic volumes (even with the two-lane section in WV) plus nary a traffic light after Beavercreek, OH going east/southbound.
US 20 from Buffalo to Albany, NY. Varying scenery and a pleasant drive through many of the villages along the way.
US 17 from I-64 in Chesapeake, VA to US 64 in Williamston, NC. A nice semi-coastal drive through and/or around small towns in eastern NC.
Mine is US-61 and 151 from the Quad Cities to Madison (except the Verona Rd bit in Madison).
NJ 29 is my favorite - great view of the Delaware River for most of it's length to the view of the Downtown Trenton skyline is very nice, and relaxing (until you realize what kind of state Trenton is in ).
US 24, as Telegraph Rd. in Michigan. I have never been on such an awesome roadway in any other state, and that is largely due to Michigan Lefts.
M-21, M-24, and M-59 are all close contenders as well, and while they are each unique (Standard Highway, Michigan Expressway, and Freeway/Expressway Combo) they are all awesome to drive and I have a lot of good memories associated with them.
SR-526 (WA) is also a favorite due to the confines in which it was built, and it is a modern road with a left-hand exit (I love Left Exits) to I-5 North.
US 24, as the Hoosier Heartland Highway. I love the improvements made to this road. It shows what a modern expressway can be. It doesn't plow through the land, it glides over and through it, and aside from some dumb mistakes, like stop signs on the main route and having to turn at traffic lights and stop signs to follow the route, it is a great drive.
Arizona 89A between Flagstaff and Wickenburg.
The Francis Scott Key Bridge.
US 11 from Scranton to Binghamton, with its view of the viaducts
US 19/460 in Mercer County, WV and Tazewell County, VA, the first divided highway that I had ridden on as a kid
The super-2 section of NH 101 between Bedford and Milford.
HI 360 on Maui. But I might feel differently about the ~600 hairpin curves, 42 one-lane bridges, and 15 mph speed limit on most of the highway, if I lived in the Hana area and had to regularly travel the highway to and from the rest of Maui.
For less curvaceous highways, US 50 in Nevada east of Fallon is really fast and a lot of fun.
For non-U.S. highways, there's Nova Scotia's Cabot Trail.
Route 66 and its descendants, especially the same-numbered state routes in OK, AZ and CA.
Also, Route 99 and its descendants in CA, OR and WA.

Nice road. I took that back in 2007, and I wound up getting caught in a pack of locals (pickup trucks) on the way back from Hana. The 15 mph limit is just a suggestion to them. We wound up doing about 40 on most of the highway on the way back.
holy zombie thread.
I'm pretty sure I still love Maryland state route 810G the best out of everything that has ever existed.
For driving, I'd say VA 153 and VA 183, along with countless low-traffic back roads.
Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Both are "secret" Va. 48.
Never been able to figure out if the Blue Ridge Parkway has a route number in North Carolina or not.
In California - 166 between Santa Maria and 33. Beautiful winding river road and bereft of car and cycle traffic compared to similar surrounding roads, like 33.
In Arizona - State route 89 between Wickenburg and Prescott. Before the fire, this was a beautiful travelogue from the desert floor up through various vegetation ranges into the Bradshaw Mountains. Very green in the Spring. Another great motorcycle route.
Nicolls Road (Suffolk CR 97)
Sunrise Highway/Montauk Highway (NY 27)
Robert Moses Causeway
Taconic Parkway
Mount Carmel Connector (CT 40)
CT 154 in Old Saybrook
CT 82 in the vicinity of East Haddam
Haverstraw Road (Rockland CR 90)
The two county routes that I mention are both in New York.
US 16A south of Keystone. The pigtails are fun.
Back when I lived in Easton I loved PA 33, but I haven't been there for a few years now.
Over the years I've come to really like ND 23 in western North Dakota, if only because I drive it all the time when visiting relatives in that part of the state. It's pretty, like most of the western half of the state, especially near the Missouri River. My only complaint is that the speed limit from the ND 37 corner near Parshall to New Town is only 55 mph :-/.
An honorable mention is the Badlands Loop (SD 240).

Absolutely.
Another favorite is the Big Thompson Canyon Road in Colorado, scenic with sweeping curves that are fun to drive.
US 83 north of Amararillo.
State highway 60 freeway in SoCal.
The secondary highway known as US 278. Between SC 39 and Beech Island.

Ah, there are a ton!
CA-1
US 101 in Oregon and northern California. I feel Washington's segment is a little lackluster.
CA-96, the Klamath River Highway
WA-14. I actually like driving on this side of the Gorge vs. the Oregon side because I feel you're going too fast and miss a lot of the great scenery on I-84. Wasn't this historic US 830?
HI 11-19 (Big Island Loop) - Great scenery throughout, and very diverse.
CA-120
AZ-89A through Sedona

Arizona 89A between Flagstaff and Wickenburg.
AZ 89A does not reach Wickenburg the route ends in Prescott at AZ89
