Title: Signs on roads in shadows of interstates that need updating

In New Jersey on I-287 SB in Parsippany still uses Clifton and Dover as contol cities for US 46 spite I-80 has been completed there for almost 35 years.  As a kid I remember I-80 not being there and that is why it is signed that way as US 46 was the major east- west route.

Also, further south on I-287 New York is still used as control city for US 22 Eastbound, a reminent of before I-78 was completed, still in place! Since I-78 was finished NJDOT has replaced all signs on I-287 from US 202 & 206 in Bedminster to I- 95  and did not make the change either.

Holland Tunnel is still used as control city for US 22 on the Garden State Parkway NB in Union, NJ with no mention of it for I-78 its companion interstate that should have the Tunnel as one of its control points.  Although, there are the same 4 traffic signals on both routes  into the Holland Tunnel in Jersey City, but still the interstate should be domain!

Washington is still control city on US 1 Northbound at many points where it parallels I-95 in Northern Virginia!  US 1 has many stoplignts where I-95 is definetly the route into the Nation's Capital here!

Strictly speaking, not even your statement is correct.  While I-95 nips a corner of DC proper at the WWB, it's over water only with zero interchanges, while US 1 is arguably a better route into DC at certain times during the week from just about everywhere north of Fort Belvoir.

I was referring to further south than that like Fredericksburg or Ashland!  True north of Fort Belvoir it is worth having considering it makes no sense to head west to reach I-95 while US 1 is most direct!

Even further south, I've often found it more advantageous to take US 1, especially between Ashland and Fredericksburg.

I don't see the problem here. What's wrong with saying a highway goes somewhere that it does, in fact, go? Control points exist for reference sake so you know what you're heading towards. This does not necessarily mean that the route in question is the best route to take to the listed destination.

Besides, no driver is going to spontaneously alter their course just because they see a sign indicating a route to their destination other than the one they intended to take. Especially not when their intended route is an interstate and the other route is a US highway.
If anything, unenlightened navigators have the opposite problem: they will automatically favor interstates and not even consider that a lower-class route might sometimes be better.
