The Cabot Trail which loops through northern Cape Breton Island is always signed with a "Scenic" route marker......never it's Trunk 30 designation which seems to be used for accounting purposes only.

The Cabot Trail apparently once had a trunk-style route marker, with "Cabot Trail" in script rather than its hidden route number:

This was taken on an old bridge east of Margaree Harbour, which was being replaced with a new bridge when I drove the Trail in August 2003 on my way to Newfoundland. It may have been the last vestige of the old route signage.

Thanks for posting that. I've been looking for one of those old makers for a few years now but believe they have all been replaced. The last one I saw was at Cap le Moine a few years ago and I have it on video. I was looking for it last year and it's gone.
here's an even older Cabot shield, based on the Ontario King's Highway pattern that Nova Scotia used for its numbered routes for several years in the 30s-40s.

I'd guess it's along LaPlanche St. in Amherst. About 3 miles from the NS/NB Border.....the only place where Trunks 2, 4 & 6 would Mulitplex!

Never heard of a province copying another province's shield (http://www.alpsroads.net/roads/pe/pe_6/) before.
Does the US shield have a special meaning there, or did they merely switch to copying that?
Nova Scotia copied the U.S., then P.E.I. copied Nova Scotia.
Nova Scotia still uses that US-style shield.
at one point, New Brunswick was using that route shield style as well.

NB replaces its shields very regularly and thoroughly. So does PEI, which is why I was so surprised to have even found the one. But that gets me wondering if farther off the beaten path (say the NE corner of the province) if NB may still have one of those old ones lurking around.
