Dear LaDOTD,

Why not do this study on ALL rural sections of ALL interstates in Louisiana?  Just curious.

Dear LaDOTD,

I haven't read the whole thing, but I think I know the answer to your question.  It's similar to the  law of diminishing returns (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Law_of_diminishing_returns).  Naturally, you get the greatest return from the first sample that you study, unless the point is to learn something from the comparison of one sample to the other(s).  That wouldn't be the case here, where the point is to learn something from the sample itself (how safe is a higher traffic speed on this segment of freeway?), something that will probably be true of any similar sample.

Probably not enough could be learned from additional studies to justify the additional costs.  If they raise the speed limit on the segment studied and get the results they expected, you'll probably see them begin to raise the speed limits on similar segments all over the state.

It appears that I-49 in Avoyelles, Natchitoches, and rural parts of Rapides Parish are also receiving the same speed limit increase:

And ditto to I-49 in rural St. Landry Parish, too:

More $$$ for the oil companies taking advantage of $4/gal gas, I reckon...

If implemented statewide, this will mark the first time since the NMSL that 75mph will be a speed limit east of the Mississippi.  Even along I-49 as it is, it's the first time east of the 100th Meridian.

I wish they'd implement speed limit 75 in Tennessee, Georgia, and Florida.

Don't forget Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama and the two Carolinas! :)
