I noticed that north of Frederiicksburg, VA there are no more hotels cheaper than $50 that are not roach motels! Am I correct or are there some I do not know about. It seems this way all the way to Maine!

Dunno what they cost, but there are a few south of the Beltway on US-1 that look serviceable yet merely adequate–places to stay solely for sleep and nothing else. I have no idea of rates since I live nearby. I think Inns of Virginia may be one of them and I forget the rest, but they're all on US-1 (Richmond Highway) south of Huntington Avenue and north of Quander Road.
The only one remotely plausible along that stretch is a Red Roof Inn (coincidentally, I can see it from my bay window). But their website suggests the rooms start at $85. Can't imagine the roach motels nearby are much less than that.
To be honest I've never paid the closest attention to any of them along there aside from noting their existence, simply because living so close to there (though not as close as you) I've never had reason to pay attention. I was just tossing them out there as existing.
I've stayed in the occasional roach motel when it was a choice between doing that or falling asleep at the wheel. If all I'm doing is needing a place to crash, I can stomach it for the briefest of time. (The Super 8 in Culpeper may be the worst dump we've ever stayed in....but at 2:30 AM on the way home from a UVA football game, we had to stop somewhere.)
I can remember having slept for $30/night in Laurel, Maryland, but that was in 1995. I can also remember paying $1.25 both ways on the Delaware Turnpike and it seems that is now $4 (one way only?).

Yes, I remember the two-way tolls as a kid, having to stop one right after the other in MD and DE. Delaware went one-way in partnership with Maryland on that one; since you still have to pay the same amount either way, each state still gets the same revenue.

Strictly speaking, you pay/stop twice northbound...once at the Susquehanna, once at the state line. To be fair, though, they are tolls for different entities. The Susquehanna toll goes to MdTA, the state line toll goes to DelDOT.

Only for southbound traffic from Delaware, which pays toll at the MD/DE state line but not at the Susquehanna River. Northbound traffic from Baltimore pays tolls at both the Susquehanna River and at the MD/DE state line. Southbound traffic coming in from NJ on I-295 has to pay the toll for the Delaware River crossing, which does not charge toll northbound. So for long-haul traffic between Baltimore and southern NJ, there are two tolls each way (plus NJ Turnpike tolls for those also using that toll road).
I got a hotel in Times Square for $40 one night. It was worse than a hole in the wall, but it was cheap.

No, it was '03 or '04, can't remember.
