Title: Washington Discontinues Paper Maps

Due to state budget reductions and advances in new driver-assistance technologies such as GPS, online driving directions and in-vehicle navigation systems, WSDOT is no longer offering paper copies of the state highway map. Supplies of the last printed map, the 2008 — 2009 edition, have been depleted and are no longer available. However, you can view, download and print sections of the map.

The new 2011-2012 version of the State Highway Map is now available in high resolution .pdf files that can be viewed at any zoom level maintaining crystal clear clarity.

Private mapping companies have printed maps available for purchase. Check online by searching "Washington road maps,"  or visit your local bookstore for availability and options. Travel organizations and motor clubs may also offer maps as part of their membership benefits. Check with your travel or motor club for details.

Now that is a bummer.

And the map looks cheapened in its switch from CAD to ArcMap for the design.

One of the best maps in the business just took a bad turn. That's really saddening.

Will the map even render in a cheap ebook reader without a long wait?

I sincerely hope this doesn't become a trend.

In Oklahoma, there's a notice how many maps were printed and that they cost just over a dime a piece to print. If they ever got financially unsound, I would prefer that they just stick the things in a vending machine and sell them for a quarter instead of having to content with Rand McNally's junk.

Those maps were really good. I'm definitely sad to see them go.
