What are they? I've read in multiple places that I-405 in Los Angeles has the highest ADT of any highway in the country. Can anyone confirm this WITH COUNTS? What are the others with super high volumes (I-10 in LA, NJ Turnpike, etc.)?
Where are the lowest volumes on interstates in the U.S.?
How about by state? Its a big country.
I might also suggest for those who like a more nuanced analysis: How many of your interstates would warrent being a freeway based on car volume alone?( I mean the mostly rural sections)
In Illinois the lightest Interstates are I-180 -Only 2000,I-72 many sections under 10,000. I -64 eastern sections and I-155 southern sections -all under 10,000 without trucks far less.
The busiest are well known I90/94 The Kennedy and Dan Ryan around 300,000 vpd
In Maine, my guess would be the I-95 stretch between Lincoln and Houlton. Only traveled it once myself, but I don't remember a lot of cars on it, and trying hard to stay awake!! :sleep:
I-25 through Wyoming is horribly low volume- I have to imagine traffic counts don't warrant more than a two lane road except through Casper and south of Cheyenne.
Yeah, I-25 from Casper to Buffalo is one dead stretch of road.

I'm not sure which one now had the highest AADT, but ISTR from a few years ago that the lightest volume section was I-15 at the Idaho-Montana state line.
For Wisconsin (an I have not seen any actual recent numbers), the heaviest is likely I-94 near Miller Park in Milwaukee, lightest is likely I-90 between la Crosse and Tomah.
For Illinois, the heaviest is likely the Dan Ryan Expressway (I-90/90) near Comiskey Park in Chicago, the lightest is likely I-180 (I-72 west of Springfield is also pretty light).

Those exits in NE Wyoming on I-90 are funny. They look almost like a direct right turn, but they had to kind of make them up to freeway standards.

I agree. I was at a Milwaukee Brewers night game and afterwards it was bumper-to-bumper on I-94 at 11pm.

Prior to "Carmageddon," I heard news report stating that I-405 through the Sepulveda Pass in L.A. had traffic of around 500,000 vehicles per day. The busiest portion of I-405 is 374,000 vehicles per day (between CA 22 and I-605 in Orange County), as counted by Caltrans in 2009. That's probably the busiest section of freeway in California.

If I had to guess I'd say 395 is Connecticut's least used interstate. But I could be wrong.
Most used would no doubt be I-95 anywhere south of New Haven.

The reporter probably added both directions of the highway together. Or, if the official published figures are already a sum of both directions – are they? – perhaps the reporter mistakenly interpreted them as single-direction figures and doubled them to count both directions.

Heaviest: Either I-696 near M-53 or the north-south portion of I-96 near Detroit
Lightest: I-75 between M-134 and M-28
Iowa
Heaviest. 74 in QC and 80 Omaha about 70,000(I dont have DesMoines)
Lightest 680 4800 20 if signed between Wtaerloo and 35 would be next @ 7000. Large parts of 35 and 29 are between 11,000 and 15,000
Missouri-
Heaviest Looks like 270 by far with portions hitting 180,000 where MODOT wants to make more lanes@11 feet
Lightest. Looks like 72 in Hannibal @ 8000. Like Iowa parts of 35,29 and the new 49 are in that 11-15,000 range
For Indiana:
Heaviest- It's a tossup between the Borman Expressway (80/94) in Northwest Indiana, and the stretch of I-465 from I-70 to I-69 on the Northeast side of Indy.
Lightest- I-64 from I-69/I-164 to around SR 161 to the east and from US 41 west to the state line
I realize I cannot make a trip to Illinois now without checking out I-180.
Texas....lowest would have to be I-10 just east of I-20. At least its 80 MPH.
Hmmm I'd have to check for Louisiana but my guess would be
Lowest: I-49 either between Natchitoches and Alexandria or between Alexandria and Opelousas
Highest: Definitely I-10 in New Orleans, probably at the causeway or near the 610?

180 is a a strange route I would recommend the trip. It was built for a steel plant
Illinois is studying a 4 lane connection south along IL 29 to Peoria. It would be IL 29(or 6) not an interstate
