There has been some discussion on passing lanes under the US 20 Tollway thread in Midwest region so I wondered how you liked this road in Missouri

It has 8000 vpd which is twice the volume of US 20

Sounds like a three-lane road with alternating center lane passing zones. Not a new idea. ODOT converted the old three-lane section of SH 3 in Canadian County from a "suicide lane" center passing lane to an alternating one back in the '80s (since four-laned).

Still a good idea in areas with the traffic count for it.

Nope don't like it as it is a bastardization of what should be a four lane area. It probably will lead to a few head on accidents as people are confused with it. However it's typical of lets do it on the cheap theory at MODOT.

MODOT had its budget cut in half and there has been some discussion of fuel economy affecting the gas tax...
well even worse is the prosed domestic discretionary cuts in this budget deal.

I hate to say it but we are going from a cheap era to an even cheaper on

Not to mention Missouri has one of the cheapest state fuel taxes in the country. Up the price and maybe they could afford the roads they really need to build.
