I'll try to explain what I'm talking about: a route that can be followed from one city to another, using multiple numbered highways. For example, signs for US 95 north in Las Vegas have a control city of Reno. Presumably there are signs at the subsequent junctions where you turn to reach Reno (via Yerington or Fallon?). Going the other way, there's probably nothing in Reno for Las Vegas, but an auxiliary sign for the West Fernley exit on I-80 eastbound says Las Vegas.
So these aren't really control cities per se, but faraway city pairs where the route between them is marked at turns.
US 97 south in Oregon being signed for "San Francisco" has to rank as one of the most extreme examples of this:

On US 95 north, there are no signs pointing to Reno at Schurz (where US 95 Alt splits off the mainline). However, the US 95 junction at US 50 in Fallon does indeed point to Carson City and Reno.
There is no other signage pointing to Las Vegas from Reno, other than the sign on I-80 you mentioned.
Another example I assume would be Las Vegas and Phoenix. US 93/95 southbound uses Phoenix as a control city, which requires a turn at US 60 in Wickenburg, AZ. Phoenix was signed at the old junction in town, so I imagine it's also signed at the new 93 bypass junction.
