Some comments about things posted in your galleries. M-65 south of M-55 was once US 23. M-65 was also US 23 north of Lachine.
The photo in Mackinaw City would be Huron Avenue. Cockburn Island, ON, is not visible from the Straits of Mackinac. That land would be part of the UP mainland. Depending on the time of day, the reason it would get lighter as you drove westbound is that most of the UP should be on Central Time. In fact, my home town is basically due north of Green Bay and Chicago, yet it's on Eastern Time. The sun doesn't set there in the summer until 10:30 at the latest. That rail overpass where the highway dips down is US 2/US 41/M-35 on the north side of Escanaba. The Lloyd Loom Building is on US 41 in Menominee.
1. It's the Sears Tower, not the Willis Tower (just a temp name used only by the media and a few others - no local uses the name).
2. The CN Tower is just that, a tower, and the Petronas are only taller the Sears on 1 of 4 criteria. The Sears is taller on 2 out of 4 criteria.
3. The Ryan (aka South Expressway) opened in 1962.
4. It's called "The Loop", not just "downtown".
5. What you have no idea what it is for is a tunnel for the Sbd Calumet Expressway (aka Bishop Ford Fwy) under the Nbd lanes of I-57 merging into the Nbd Ryan.
6. It's a standard red "X", not the Alabama state flag. That's used in many places in the state for a lane that ends.

Actually, it got lighter as he drove west because it was cloudy earlier, blocking the sun. Those clouds were gone once he got into Escanaba. The sun would be pulling away at a bit over 1000 mph; there's no way he's catching it doing 55-65 on US-2.

That may be, but it still stays lighter much later in the UP. Beyond the time zone anomaly, there's also the fact that the farther north you go, the later the sun stays up in the summer.

You're mistaken. The Alabama flag is actually officially adopted to use over closed lanes. The Libyan flag is used for open lanes.
