Title: Some Cool Street/Road/Highway/Freeway NAMES
Post by: yanksfan6129 on March 06, 2009, 11:18:30 PM
I've always found Street Rd. in the Philly area to be quite funny.

And of course Shades of Death Road, in New Jersey, MY state.

Governor Dingwall Mem. Hwy. somewhere in the Northeast, I think CT. Don't remember where I saw it...
Then there's Smiley Rd. in one of the really ghetto parts of Hampton... I sure wouldn't be smiling if I lived there.

No Name Uno Avenue in Gilroy, CA.  (Supposedly, there was also once a "No Name Dos" before it was removed in the 1970's to make way for the US 101 freeway.)

A couple of my favorites:

-Bakeoven Road near Maupin, Oregon.  It's appropriately out in the desert part of the state, running as a sort of "shortcut" between US-197 and US-97.  The part coming out of Maupin gets to be a bit . . . um . . . interesting.

-Cipole Road in Tualatin, Oregon.  The name's actually a corruption of the Italian word for "onion", cipolla.

-Chinquapin Round Road in Annapolis, MD.  Actually somewhat of a major thoroughfare, where MD-665 (Aris T. Allen Blvd) ends and becomes Forest Drive.

-Silopanna Road in Annapolis, MD.  It's Annapolis backwards.

-Romancoke Road in MD, just on the east side of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge (US-50/301).  It sounds like "rum and coke" if you say it fast.

-Joel's Place in Lafayette, Oregon.  In a newer residential neighborhood.

And I believe there's an exit for Stinking Creek Rd on I-75 in Tennessee.

In that case, I hope that the "Hitler" in question (as in the one the road is named for) was just a friendly farmer that happened to be German and happened to by named Hitler.

I don't think there is any road in this country named after the vaunted most well known Hitler.

New York also has some good ones. In The Bronx, there's Faile Street, and the next block over is Hoe Avenue. In Brooklyn, there's Force Tube Avenue. In Queens, there's Arlene Fuchs Katz Drive. In Staten Island, there's Fingerboard Road.
And in Manhattan, you can get off the subway at Dyckman Street, walk west a block and make a right on Seaman Avenue, and then walk another block and make another right on Cumming Street. Really (http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=40.866284,-73.926669&spn=0.003578,0.01133&z=17).
The intersection of the latter two become world famous several years back when someone posted a picture of the street sign on the internet...

QuoteTreat Boulevard in Concord, CA.

There's a Treat Avenue in Stamford, CT (little residential side street northeast of downtown, easily missed).
"Treat" is likely someone's last name.

And, speaking of Stamford... you know how an awful lot of towns in the past few decades have renamed a street after Martin Luther King? Well, Stamford never did, although we have, completely independent of each other and unrelated, a "Martin Street", a "Luther Street", and a "King Street". All have likely had those names since before he was born.

Another quirk of Stamford is that it does not have any numbered streets in the purest sense, but does have a "First Street", "Second Street", "Third Street", etc. - up through "Eighth Street" (as opposed to "1st", "2nd", etc. the way it's done everywhere else I've ever seen it). Maybe writing the whole word out makes it fancier or something, I dunno.

One of the places I grew up (parents still live there) was on West Rambo Street in Danville, OH.  Football field's on East Tough Street, too.

Mind you, the 'Rambo' part is funny enough (I believe the name predates the movies)...but Danville has "East" and "West" for most their streets that travel that direction, even though the village has 1,050 people.

The village also has 'South' and 'North' Streets...but North Street (which is nondirectional) is well south of South Street (which is directional, so there's an East South Street and a West South Street).  The reason can be explained by the history of the village; it used to be three towns - South Street was the southernmost street in Rossville (I believe), while North Street was the northernmost street in Buckeye City.  Regardless...South Street is north (by about a half-mile, which is significant in a town of 1,050) of North Street.

These from Nebraska City, NE, might be more odd to some than cool or funny:

* Instead of having a N 1st Avenue and a S 1st Avenue, when the numbered east-west street reset at Central Avenue, everything to the south is "Corso".  Example sign:

Examples:

Way out in the eastern rural areas that Oklahoma City has annexed, there is a Triple X Road.

In Kansas City, "Trafficway" (abbreviated Trfwy.) is used in the same way St., Rd., etc. are used, though when they are used for numbered streets, "St." is usually still included. One of I-35's last exits in Kansas is to 7th St. Trfwy. And if that's not bizarre enough, there is a street in Springfield, Mo. called "Trafficway Street".

Speaking of Springfield, they have a few other interesting street names. They have both a Grant and a Grand, which (naturally) intersect. There is a Sunset and a Sunshine. There is an East11th Street–or that's what the sign says, anyway, not East 11th or E. 11th, but East11th–despite the fact there is no East10th, nor East12th, or any other numbered street in town, for that matter. Oh, and there's a Cozy Street. And a Bob Barker Boulevard. (Yes, that Bob Barker.)

Here in the Phoenix, Arizona area, we have a lot of interesting street names. Phoenix itself has Camelback Road (named for a mountain that actually looks like a kneeling camel), Indian School Road and Bethany Home Road, perhaps the only street in the US named for a (former) tuberculosis sanitarium.

In addition to the aforementioned Easy Street, the outlying suburb of Carefree has Tranquil Trail, Up & Down Place (which runs off Nonchalant Avenue), Ho Road, which intersects with Hum Road, No More Road, and for you golfers, Foursome Way, Double Eagle Road and Short Putt Place. You can access Carefree via Carefree Highway, made famous in a Gordon Lightfoot song. In Sun City West, my mother lives on Gunsight Drive.

Elsewhere, in a town called Kalaheo on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, there is a little bitty street, scarcely a quarter mile long, called Polaris Street. The name itself is not unusual (it's the astronomer's name for the North Star), but on an island where about 98% of the streets, roads and highways have Hawaiian names (Kuhio Highway, Maluhia Road, Kapaa Road), Polaris Street definitely stands out.

Honolulu has an interesting mix of non-Hawaiian (King Street, Bishop Street, Farrington Highway, Nimitz Highway) and Hawaiian (Keeaumoku Street, Piikoi Street, Kamehameha Highway, and the tongue-twisting Kalanianaole Highway). Most roads in Hawaii, though, use Hawaiian names, especially on the outer islands. Many of the major highways (Kamehameha Highway on Oahu, Kaumualii and Kuhio Highways on Kauai, Queen Kaahumanu Highway on the Island of Hawaii, aka the "Big Island") are named for Hawaiian royalty from back in the day.

Maybe not exactly funny, but my best friend and her ex were driving around Norman with me and we stumbled onto two streets bearing their last names, and they intersected. Needless to say when they were going out pictures of the blade signs at that intersection were plastered all over their MySpaces.

Thinking of Norman, there's a part of town where the street naming theme is assassinated presidents (i.e. the streets are named Lincoln Ave., Garfield Ave., and McKinley Ave.) Where the pattern breaks down, though, is they never renamed George Ave. for Kennedy...

Man, am I jealous of the rest of you.  I grew up in a town (Santa Cruz, CA) with mostly boring street names, such as:
Water Street
River Street
Ocean Street
Bay Street
Mission Street  (named after the old Catholic mission)

About the only interesting street names are Soquel Avenue (pronounced 'soh-KEL', named after an indian tribe that lived in the area) and Gharkey Street (I'm guessing someone's last name?).

Here's some goofy names for you.

In Colorado:
- Phantom Canyon Rd.
- Oh My God Rd. (I've never been on this, but I've only heard of it, it's west of Denver)

A few from Tennessee:
- Getwell Rd. (Memphis, TN)
- Hacks Cross Rd. (Germantown, TN/Olive Branch, MS)
- Rockcreek Pkwy. (Cordova, TN)

From Houston:
- Stella Link Dr. (makes me think of that movie where the guy yells out "Stelllaaaaa!").

I also find it strange when a road intersects itself. Not too far from me, there's a road called Copper Creek and it intersects itself at one point. At a four-way stop too.

Someone might think this is cool: the main entrance road to Port Columbus International Airport is an expressway called International Gateway.

In northern Upper Arlington or northwest Columbus (I'm not sure which), there's a Godown Rd.

On the west side of Columbus there's a residential development with streets called LaForge St and Tenagra Dr.  I suspect the guy coming up with street names was watching Star Trek: The Next Generation right about when he ran out of "original" ideas.

South Park Avenue in Friendship Heights, Maryland. I keep picturing Cartman yelling at passing drivers.

Interestingly, "South" is spelled out on the sign and not abbreviated to "S" like you'd expect if they were distinguishing it from another park of Park Avenue preceded by "North."

York has 'Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma-Gate (http://g.co/maps/9d3kk)': a short street with a long name - it is from where the Street View car is in the link I gave to the 'A' marker.

Perhaps only really cool if you have the sense of humour of a 14-year-old boy, but Castleford, Yorks has a railway bridge called 'Tickle Cock Bridge (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tickle_Cock_Bridge)' and a large number of English cities had a 'Gropecunt Lane (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gropecunt_Lane)' which were where the prostitutes hung out in the Middle Ages. All the Gropecunt Lanes have been renamed, for obvious reasons of decency with the change in usage of the last four letters (going way back)...

Well, of course, in Atlanta there are several roads with the word "Peachtree" in it.

Examples:

Peachtree Street
Peachtree Road
Peachtree Industrial Boulevard
Peachtree Parkway
West Peachtree Street
Peachtree Battle Avenue
Peachtree Memorial Drive
Old Peachtree Road
Peachtree Place

Those are the only ones that I can think of off of the top of my head.

Be well,

Bryant

Here in Houston, all in the same area, we have North Post Oak Road, South Post Oak Lane, North Post Oak Lane, Post Oak Blvd, and South Post Oak Road... all in the Uptown Area.  None of these streets intersect each other.  N Post Oak runs from Hempstead to end at the West Loop frontage road, the two Lanes are smaller side streets, Post Oak Blvd runs from a dead end near some high rises to end at Westpark Drive/Tollway, and S Post Oak Lane begins at the curve where the West Loop becomes the south Loop and heads south to a very... not so nice area of town

Country roads in West Virginia are great for this kind of thing:

Pinchgut Hollow Road in Fairmont (I don't even want to know the story behind this one, even if my friend does live off this road)
Hoot and Holler Road near French Creek (Not making this up!)
Cow Run Road in Rock Cave
Getout Run Road in French Creek
Lick Run Road in Buckhannon (probably named after a stream or something, but definitely not what I think of when I am on this road)
Gnatty Creek Road north of Buckhannon

Obviously, many roads in the area are of the "X Run Road" type, and the Upshur County 911 mapping/addressing ordinance (which I read, of course) was supposed to minimize these, but doesn't look like it happened.

I once witnessed a car wreck on the outskirts of Johnston City, Illinois.  I called 9-1-1, and stated that I was on Johnston City Road.  The dispatcher said, "Which one?"  You see, in southern Illinois, a road to ABCD town is called ABCD Blacktop or ABCD Road, even if that's not its official name.  As a matter of fact, I was actually on what is officially Corinth Road, but it was called Johnston City Road back where I had turned onto it from Harco Road.  So I just replied, "The one coming in from Harco Road", and they sent an officer out.  Why can't we just use highway numbers for minor roads?

Prettyboy Reservoir is part of the Baltimore Municipal Water System.  The road goes across the crest of the dam.  The part that was renamed joins the  original  Prettyboy Dam Rd  at an intersection about a mile from the dam.

The Minneapolis numbered street system appends 1/2 for in-between streets. I believe there's a 25-1/2 St. exit off MN-100 in St. Louis Park. I've never seen any other fraction used. The Avenue F-1/2 example cited above is used in Mesa County (around Grand Junction), CO, where each E-W section line road is Road [X] and there are fractional roads in between (a quick look at Google Maps shows an F-1/4 Road just north of which is F-3/10).

One time going to some sort of museum out that way (if not Minnesota, a neighboring state) put me on 24 1/8 Rd or something similar. I think we got a photo of the street sign - one of those old-timey print photos tucked away in an album.

Well, in southern Wake Co., NC there is a Rock Service Station Road. There is indeed a service station at the end of it but it isn't built out of rock. Another local road name I like is Six Forks Road. Away from here, I like MacDonald-Cartier Freeway in Ontario (highway 401). At one time there were shields on that route with "M-C" in place of the number. I think these are gone now (?) If so, I wish they would come back.

13 1/2 Street NW in the District of Columbia is a very useful street because left turns are not permitted from westbound Pennsylvania Avenue to southbound 14th Street. Instead you go left onto 13 1/2, which then after half a block hooks 90 degrees right onto D Street. That ends at a light at 14th and you can go left there. It's not a very well-known shortcut these days. It was more heavily-used in the days prior to the Reagan Building's construction when there was a huge car park there. I suspect people stopped going that way largely because there is an entrance to the underground parking garage in the middle of 13 1/2 Street and the security presence makes people think the road isn't open to the public.

Even funnier . . . Northwest South Parc Drive (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=NW+South+Parc+Street+Portland,+OR&hl=en&ll=45.552766,-122.835624&spn=0.008159,0.021136&sll=45.552796,-122.835624&sspn=0.008159,0.021136&hnear=NW+South+Parc+St,+Portland,+Washington,+Oregon+97229&t=m&z=16) in the Bethany area of unincorporated Washington County, Oregon.  The fact that it's "Northwest South" is funny enough.  But notice the "c"--the development went in right around the time the South Park cartoon started in the late-90s, and as it was intended to be a relatively well-to-do "luxury apartment" development, they didn't want anyone to make that association.  So they misspelled "park" as "parc".  Later developments in the same basic area also took on the same spelling as well ("Bethany Parc").

7th North Street in Syracuse, NY instead of North 7th Street.  Also the rest of the grid as this is only one street like this of a few.

Some cities use 1/2 for service alleys in between full numbered streets.  Mitchell, SD has some.

Frelinghuseyn Avenue in Newark, NJ is cool because unless you know the street, you will most likely have trouble pronouncing it.  Free-ling-high-sen is how you say it.

Boulevard of the Allies in Pittsburgh is cool as its name has the descriptor first.

I just spotted this afternoon Ragged Ass Road, a short side street in the Old Town section of Yellowknife in Canada's Northwest Territories.

Supposedly, this started as an unofficial name, but it was later officialized by the city, and street signs were erected.  The signs were, of course, frequently stolen.  Now the street name is marked only on a sign firmly bonded to a large hard-to-steal boulder.  Replicas of the original street blades can be purchased at a local souvenir shop about two blocks away from Ragged Ass Road.

up north while traveling on US45, you will come across an intersection of two local roads, named 'Now Rd, and Old 26 Rd.' the sign aproaching them says:
