Title: US9 and the great egg harbor bridge in NJ
Post by: SteveG1988 on November 04, 2011, 03:32:07 PM
How long until you guys estimate the Temporary US9 shields will remain?

Since for the past 8 years (9 in 2012) the Beesleys point bridge has been closed, and has no signs of being fixed up.

Right now here is how the route is signed.

Does the whole GSP have the reassurance markers?  Last time I was in NJ in 1999 there were none

I was just going to say, that has to be the first GSP reassurance marker I have ever seen. The sections where US-9 multiplex (Bass River and Toms River Bypass) do have US-9 reassurance markers. FWIW, the NJTP doesn't do reassurance markers either (they sign I-95 sparingly too).

I don't believe they have any intent to sign reassurance markers on the freeways. This must be related to the 9 detour, letting you know that you've been diverted to the Parkway.

I heard that these were installed because those on 9 SB who were forced onto the GSP were stopping to ask directions at the toll plaza. when I first drove by it last winter, I was annoyed that the TEMP plaque was there but I'm over it because it would be worse if it was omitted.

since it is common knowledge that the BP Bridge will never open, it will probably be decades before NJDOT officially reroutes 9 onto the GSP via AASHTO.

I don't care about the bridge all that much, but what is with that ugly fence? I also notice that the razor wire curves in both directions, to the road and away from the road. Normally, razor wire is installed in the direction of the people. If you want to keep people out, such as with a factory, install it towards the road. If you want to keep em in, such as with a prison, install it curving away from the road.

Believe it or not, the fence is to prevent terrorists from bombing the bridge. See here:

:banghead: And just how exactly is this going to stop someone from stopping on the road shoulder? Your government at work, I guess. :banghead:

It was meant as a joke....that the offical story it is a Anti Terrorism Fence, but they really wanted a anti deer fence.  Also a fence at that location probably works better as a ADF than a ATF.

No sense of humor.
