Title: Maps of Cancelled Freeways
Post by: triplemultiplex on December 01, 2011, 06:24:05 PM
We often discuss proposed and canceled freeway projects and I think it would be cool if we had a place where we can post maps of cities and their killed freeways.  I'm really interested in getting maps of whole cities/metro areas with all their real world freeway proposals.  Mostly historic, but I suppose future is good too.  This way, when a dead freeway comes up in discussion, everyone can have a map they can quickly reference.  I know this stuff is out there at various roadgeek sites, etc. but if images and links were all in one thread, that would make life better for everyone.

So post your maps, others' maps, official maps, annotated Google Maps, etc. and let's create a library of as many cities as we can.

I'll get it started with this excellent map of Milwaukee created by Chris Bessert.

Because it's a large image, you'll need to click.

I need to scan it, but my 2003 Rand McNally atlas shows an eastern bypass of Nashua, NH as being under construction. It appears not to have been built.

@_@  man, if all THOSE roads had been built, Hartford would have looked like a large bowl of spaghetti!

I partially completed a shapefile for dead freeways in Baltimore when working on my GIS map of the area. I based the projections from a variety of old fold maps within my collection and a couple of documents on Scott Kozel's web site. The map is incomplete, but I have little desire to work on it again.

The first GIS map I made was for Washington, DC and I made a shapefile for the dead Interstates there. Likely will remake that map in a future update, but for now you can view it at the DC page (https://www.aaroads.com/mid-atlantic/district_of_columbia.html).

Very interesting ... with that outer beltway.

Also, it is obvious that the I-990 Lockport Expressway northern terminus is configured for a future extension, as the map shows.

I have a scan from the 1963 Pittsburgh Area Transportation Plan on the Pittsburgh's Cancelled Expressways (http://pittsburgh.pahighways.com/expressways/cancelled/) page.

I found a map from 1936 of the Town of Brookhaven out here on LI with some interesting roads that never were: (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi.imgur.com%2FKU28u.jpg&hash=783bac33ab102c139f75af122cd5f40d7bf4d3e0) (http://imgur.com/KU28u)

However, it's by no means definite since there were so many proposals during the next 50 years.

Notice that one of the current freeways wasn't even on this proposed map (I-279).

That scan of Milwaukee is incredible, thanks for posting.  It really seems excessing having two beltlines (I-894 and the proposed Belt Freeway) for a city the size of Milwaukee, though I'm sure the thought was Chicago traffic wanting to completely bypass the city.

Some of these scans were obviously cooked up by people who later became rampant Sim City fans, it seems!

This map from the late 60's posted by Marc at speakupwny.com shows many more Buffalo proposed projects.  Where would have people lived in Buffalo if all these were implemented?

Based on declining population and industry since then, they certainly are adequate with the current beltway, and don't need an outer beltway.

A Google map I've worked on showing various St. Louis facilities that didn't quite make it:

Notice that one of the current freeways wasn't even on this proposed map (I-279).

I-79 would have come into Pittsburgh by making a left turn at the 856 keystone then a right on the expressway from the PA 8/PA Turnpike interchange.  I-279 was planned to be the designation for the what is now 79 between the Penn-Lincoln Parkway and the current I-279 interchange in Franklin Park.
