Title: Replica shields at DisneyWorld Parks
Post by: CanesFan27 on December 01, 2011, 11:24:09 PM
You wouldn't think while in Disney - on your honeymoon - you'd find some roadgeek items.  But there were a few 'repica' and 'creative' highway shields in Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom.

I'll let all you sign experts grade them

I've never been able to find where those are in person.

there's a "Florida 97" made to California green-spade specs which floats around somewhere as well.

the embossed 66 with narrow fonts floats around.  the 498 is quite well done, looking much like a 1940s California issue.

I'm vaguely remembering that one being on the Rock 'n' Roller Coaster in the Hollywood Studios, but it's been a few years.

Florida 97 is on Test Track (one in the line, another on the ride): http://www.flickr.com/photos/avalonstar/304557628/ US 66 is on one of the main roads in the Studios. US 498 is in the dinosaur area of Animal Kingdom (hurr Diggs County). I-95 must be recent.

There's also the second and tenth signs, probably legit, on http://www.usends.com/Focus/KeyWest/index.html

I saw the Fla 97 while in line for the Test Track.  Didn't have my camera with me that night.

The I-95 NY is in Streets of America (near the Muppet Theatre and backstage ride area) in Hollywood Studios.  There is also a Scenic Route US 101 sign on a light post in the same area.

I didn't catch it until I uploaded the photos - so that's the best shot of it I have.

Here is a photo of the US 101 sign I took in 2008.

I have a photo gallery with the US 498 signs and some others from Dinoland/Diggs County.

The signs look good from my untrained eye.  Looks like Disney's Imagineers put some effort into making them realistic.

The shape of the 101 shield is off just a little, but it's passable. Certainly no worse than the sorts of things that actually get posted.

What's with the random British sign over to the left though?

the red has faded, but that looks to me (and I'm not an expert) as being 100% to British specs.

Perhaps the lot sometimes doubles as being 'London' (we're used to bad Londons so we just file it under "what Americans think London looks like", along with masses of snow every winter - it looked worse in the 90s and early 00s growing up seeing London/Southern England have a couple of inches at snow in December - at least now I've seen it for real a couple of times).

I think that area is supposed to look like a studio backlot.

There's a "Chinatown" too.

The 101 shield looks exactly like one of the older specs that's been thrown around various threads, actually.
