Early last week, a couple of lost young ladies were on a road near I-30 at a midpoint of Lake Ray Hubbard (east of Dallas). Before they know it, they're suddenly down a boat ramp and in the water. Luckily, a county sheriff's deputy was around and saved them; they couldn't swim. The video in the link shows VERY poor signage, and apparently the area isn't well-lit either. Their solution? Re-arrrange the poor signage and use taller posts. Yeah, right. Like that'll help. Those signs just scream *unreflective*.
Hey, we have people in Florida who do not understand the meaning of EXIT ONLY with an arrow pointing down to a specific lane. They ride the lane regardlessly, and then move over back into the main lanes that they should have been in the first place. Even with the dotted pavement markings it does not register in some people's minds that something is up.
In 1988, when I drove the California Interstates and came across the dotted line I quickly figured out that my lane was most likely going to exit! Being from New Jersey at that time, we did not have anything like that! So the dotted lines stood out to me and got my attention real fast and I moved over long before the lane turned into ramp.
I cannot figure out for the life of me why it does not register in many other minds.
