Group forms to save historic bridge from demolition
MELISSA MACKEY --Staff Writer
LibÂerty TownÂship is lookÂing for those interÂested in savÂing the 1800s-era Orange Road bridge, which has been slated for demoÂliÂtion since 2009.
TownÂship resÂiÂdent Jim BresÂnaÂhan recently approached the townÂship about formÂing a comÂmitÂtee to genÂerÂate ideas on how to preÂserve the hisÂtoric bridge, said Dave AnderÂson, townÂship administrator.
The comÂmitÂtee will be more of a short-term inforÂmal group and is seekÂing either a letÂter of interÂest or resume from interÂested citÂiÂzens by Feb. 17. The numÂber of peoÂple on the comÂmitÂtee will be limÂited. So far, about three peoÂple have expressed an interÂest, AnderÂson said.
The townÂship is seekÂing citÂiÂzens from a variÂety of backgrounds.
"We want to get a diverse group of peoÂple to take a look at what the options are," AnderÂson said. "We want to have citÂiÂzen input and have their finÂgerÂprints on the glass, so to speak. There are some strong opinÂions out there, but hard choices need to be made."
MemÂbers of the comÂmitÂtee will be tasked with offerÂing ideas and options for the Orange Road bridge, which will then be given to Delaware County EngiÂneer Chris Bauserman.
The Orange Road bridge, which is listed on the National RegÂisÂter of HisÂtoric Places, was closed to trafÂfic due to strucÂtural and safety issues in 2007. A new bridge opened to trafÂfic in 2009, which is just north of the hisÂtoric one.
BauserÂman said the Ohio DepartÂment of NatÂural Resources requires a plan for the bridge, whether that's movÂing the bridge from its curÂrent locaÂtion or demolÂishÂing it.
BauserÂman has met with a few peoÂple interÂested in preÂservÂing the bridge and said the county is willÂing to work with the comÂmitÂtee if a feaseÂble alterÂnaÂtive is offered.
"They've asked us to be at least part of the task force and offer techÂniÂcal assisÂtance to them," BauserÂman said. "We're willÂing to work with them and try to help sort out what they'd like to see done with the bridge. Our comÂmitÂment has been to remove the bridge from the river from the beginÂning or find someÂone who wants to reuse the bridge."
The plan is to seek bids for the nearby roundÂabout conÂstrucÂtion project at CarÂriage Drive and Ohio 315 in late spring to include an alterÂnate bid for removÂing the Orange Road bridge strucÂture, BauserÂman said. EstiÂmates for removÂing the bridge, removÂing and reloÂcatÂing the bridge and demolÂishÂing the bridge for scrap mateÂriÂals would be included in the bid, he said.
"I don't think anyÂbody involved in this at any level would want to see the old bridge there colÂlapse with no care and upkeep," BauserÂman said. "This is someÂthing that wasn't iniÂtiÂated by the county or townÂship, but a group of peoÂple who want to try to at least invesÂtiÂgate preÂservÂing the bridge. If we can do that within our limÂiÂtaÂtions, I don't see any reaÂson for us not to do that."
BauserÂman said that it's the county's finanÂcial responÂsiÂbilÂity to remove the bridge that traÂverses the river. If the group is interÂested in putting it back together someÂwhere else, that would have to be funded privately.
"If the bridge is renÂoÂvated and left in place for some use, we've said we would pledge the amount of money it takes to remove it for that purÂpose, as long as some other group picked up the rest of the cost," BauserÂman said.
SevÂeral years ago, the county estiÂmated that it would cost about $350,000 to make the bridge usable for pedesÂtrian use. That amount would be higher today, BauserÂman said.
The townÂship doesn't have much in the way of funds, if any, to help with the project, AnderÂson said.
"With the state and fedÂeral budÂgets being balÂanced on the back of local govÂernÂment, we have more chalÂlenges than ever," AnderÂson said. "We're not in a posiÂtion to put a whole lot of cash into someÂthing like this. We cerÂtainly can't use road or fire funds. It would only come from the genÂeral fund if that is a choice to be made."
Those interÂested in joinÂing the comÂmitÂtee should conÂtact AnderÂson at 740—938-2000. The comÂmitÂtee would get started with meetÂings this month, AnderÂson said.

It seemed usable to my buddies and me as pedestrians (http://www.flickr.com/photos/rawmustard/5744204150) last May. Certainly the expense can't be too much greater. :)

Unfortunetly, the Orange Road Bridge experience has soured Bauserman on preserving any of the last three iron bridges left in the county.
