Title: Interstate 140 in Wilmington, NC
Post by: jcarte29 on February 13, 2012, 07:35:35 PM
Ok so this has always been confusing to me...

I take it that 3di's have to start at an existing Interstate (notably their "parent" as I-140 does at I-40, heading west and slightly south to Brunswick County) but highway maps show it goin East as well. Since it can't be a full circle (Wilmington is on the coast, so it would circle over the Atlantic), can it ever be West, and East, of its parent interstate?

If Jacksonville ever had a chance for a 3di, an upgraded US 17 built to Interstate standards could carry, say, 140 north, correct? or no?

extending I-140 all the way to Jacksonville along US-17 would be quite the feat for a 3di.  Alas, I-97 and I-99 numbers are taken... so I have no idea what number it would be, but it would be about three times as long at least as the next-longest 3di.

J'ville is only 45-50 miles north of Wilmington!?!?

NE2, good point, I assume you are referring to Charleston, SC right?

I think he means Jacksonville, North Carolina, home of Camp Lejeune, NOT Jacksonville, FL.....

There would be nothing stopping I-140 from extending in both directions from its parent. I-287 does that in NY-NJ, and isn't a full loop. (In fact, it's more of an x95 in function.) I-195 in NJ does the same thing, crossing I-95 at Exit 6.

I call this type of thing a "double-ended spur".  Except in my mind I replace the last word with... something adult and alliterative.

Thanks for clarifying.

Currently, I 140 is signed west of I 40. There is an END sign in the I 40 interchange. East of I 40, the bypass is signed as US 17. NCDOT applied for the whole bypass to be I 140, but decided to only sign it west of I 40. Eventually I 140 will reach US 17 in both directions.
