INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – - A state inspector has cited the Indiana Department of Transportation and a contractor on the Interstate 69 expansion project for inadequate erosion controls that critics say could damage the environment.
The Indianapolis Business Journal reports (http://bit.ly/wcEAie ) an Indiana Department of Environmental Management inspector in December found workers for a contractor built a number of erosion control structures that weren't constructed properly to filter discharge. No financial penalties were assessed.
The report did not cite instances of damage to aquatic life, but the Hoosier Environmental Council contends the $3 billion, 142-mile new-terrain highway could damage waterways, limestone formations and wildlife.
The Council has filed a federal lawsuit trying to stop the project.
An INDOT spokeswoman says the department is working to familiarize the out-of-state contractor with Indiana's erosion regulations.
