Title: 2012 Ohio meet?
Post by: A.J. Bertin on February 20, 2012, 12:56:08 PM
Has anyone heard about an Ohio meet for this year? Last year I know it was mentioned that Dayton might be the city of choice for the 2012 Ohio meet, but I have not heard any plans at all. I know this meet is usually held the second or third Saturday in May.

Does anyone know anything? I will definitely want to attend if this meet takes place. :)

Dan Garnell usually does the Ohio meets, but he's been very silent on just about every forum where he participates. I think Richard Ruffner may be helping to set up any possible Dayton meet.

Dayton would be easily do-able as a day trip from here.

The deal brokered by Dan Garnell, between me and Richard Ruffner, was that I got to host the Ohio meet in C-bus last year and Ruffner got to host the Ohio meet in Dayton this year.
No date has been set to my knowledge.

Yes, a Dayton meet is on tap for 2012, with Mother's day, the 5th and the 19th look likely.

The 5th would be VERY doable for me, I will be in Dayton that weekend for a diecast toy show held at Hara Arena so Steph and I could do the lunch and some of a tour but I would have to get to Hara around 3 to get steup, the show is on Sunday 5/6 from 9 to 3.

Hmm... I really hope this meet is not scheduled for May 5, because I will likely be attending road meets the two previous weekends... Joliet on April 21 and Memphis on April 28. Three roadmeet weekends in a row for me is just about out of the question.

I already committed to Joliet on 4/21, and Memphis on 4/28 is a maybe. If Dayton is scheduled for 5/5, I probably won't be going to Memphis. My vote is obviously for May 19.

I am pretty much open for either May 5 or May 19, May 6 is a diecast show in the area but as far as I know, I have nothing planned on 5/19 either, Just not sure if I want to go back up to Dayton just 2 weeks later after being there on 5/5. it is a 5 and a half to 6 hour drive for me.

Wonder if there is any evidence left where that car used the median guardrail as a ramp and went up into the air and slammed against an overpass a couple of years ago? I think that happened pretty close to the southern end near I-75.

I didn't see any such evidence, and I looked for it, when I drove I-675 a couple of months ago. Though I thought it was closer to US 35, and it was dark by the time I got to I-75...

I doubt I'll attend the meet.  I'd have to ask for the day off, as would Ed probably, and we're not exactly doing well financially these days.

It was Wagner road, one exit past US-35 (Indian Ripple exit).  I believe the evidence is still there, the bridge pier is dark and scuffed.

I won't be able to attend this meet, being that I will be out of the country this particular weekend. This is also why I cannot attend the proposed DC area meet on the same day.

I know Froggie is looking at hosting a DC meet on May 19 and that Richard suggested pushing the Dayton meet to a later this weekend because of Froggie's meet.

Obviously it's not my meet and Richard can do whatever he wishes to do, but I hope he chooses to keep it on the 19th. My brother wants to attend this meet with me because we both want to explore the Dayton area and attend a Dayton Dragons baseball game that Saturday night. (They play at home that night.)

This is just my 2 cents, but once a meet is scheduled for a certain date, I don't believe another meet happening the same day should mean that the first meet gets bumped. Of course Richard can do whatever he wants to do. As more and more people schedule meets these days, it seems like this problem will continue into the future. I guess it's a good problem to have!  :)

OTOH, I would like to see Dayton rescheduled. I will probably attend one of the meets that day but not sure which one.

I talked with Dan, and we are going to reschedule once and only once.  (I call no changes).  New date: June 9th.  And, AJ, the Dragons are at home that weekend as well.  Facebook page as soon as I final up the itinerary.

Now June 9th would work better for me.

AJ:  Navy's moving me early.  My hands are tied in the matter and this is the only way to continue with a DC meet before I transfer.

I think my original frustration was that I and maybe others too were making plans based on the fact that the Ohio meet was already scheduled for a certain date (before the DC meet was announced). I know that there have been other times when two meets were scheduled on the same weekend, and people just chose between one or the other.

It's all cool... not worried at all. I'm glad that Richard made a good decision that works best for the majority of people involved. I'm really excited about this meet and can't wait to bring my brother. And bonus that the Dragons play at home that night. :)

You all did Columbus last year, right? What was the other meet that day? Wasn't it Kansas?

Dayton and DC are more likely to have to cause people to choose than Kansas and C-bus.

Richie scheduled the Kansas meet the same day as I had the Columbus meet (after I had scheduled the C-bus meet)
And as I recall, you and Brian Reynolds went to the Kansas meet instead of Ohio.

Looks like Steph and I can make it, as long as it still on 6/9, we may run a few minutes late but we are still there. Only a 6 hour drive from middle TN and will leave the house at the crack of dawn. We have friends in the area we will plan to visit too. This will make my 3rd road meet for the year!

Bump.  :sombrero:

The approaching springtime means it is about time for the 2012 Ohio Roads Meet. This year we will be meeting up in Dayton, where substantial changes have been made to the area's highway system since the last meet there in 2008. Join us on Saturday, 6/9, starting at noon... at Milano's Atlantic City Submarines, near the University of Dayton campus.

Some of the highlights of the tour will include:
1. I-75/US 35 punch-through construction
2. Completed reconstruction of I-75/OH 4 "Malfunction Junction"
3. Viewing of I-75/I-70 Freedom Veterans Crossroads interchange
4. Driving tour across re-routed US 40 @ Englewood Dam (Part 1)
5. Dixie Highway and Old National Road intersection
6. Re-routed US-40 @ Taylorsville Dam (Part 2)
7. Complete clinch of I-675 (detour to view Evel Knievel carnage on bridge)

Drove up Friday afternoon. To avoid I-75 traffic in Cincinnati, I basically took KY 11 (with a detour to check out the rerouting of KY 57 to make it a continuous route), US 68 and OH 73 to Dayton.

Signage in Aberdeen concerning US 62 and US 68 has changed since  I was last there. Ohio no longer recognizes Business US 68. Only Business US 62 is signed. Also, signage at the Ohio end of the William Harsha Bridge has changed. It originally used north and south as directions for US 68, in keeping with Ohio's practice. At some point south was changed to west to denote how Kentucky signs US 68. Now it's all north and south again.

Still a lot of butt-ugly US 68 shields north of the US 62 split. Mt. Orab has installed a lot of street signage with the route marker included, and all the signs are for "OH 68" instead of US 68. No pics, unfortunately.

Spotted an error OH 68 sign (did get a pic) and some older signage south of Wilmington.

An OH 73 bypass has been built to the north of Wilmington, but I did not know that as OH 73 is still signed along with US 22 and OH 3 through downtown.

It was a very easy drive across OH 73 to the Dayton area (Springboro), where I took OH 741 north to the Miamisburg area, where my motel was.

Meet host Dan Garnell was unable to make it, but he managed to get in touch with Sandor Gulyas, who became our host by default and led us on the tour. We saw some of the same sights as the Dayton meet back a few years ago plus some extras.

After the meet I headed south and spent the night in Florence, across the river from Cincinnati. There was some construction around the St. Bernard exit but other than that, very little to report. Most of the button copy along I-75 in Cincinnati is gone now, but a few signs still stand.

This morning's trip down I-75 to Lexington was uneventful, although I was lucky enough to miss two wrecks that had blocked southbound traffic near Corinth and again near I-64 a bit earlier.

Great to see old friends and make a couple of new acquaintances.

Steph and I made it back to middle TN fine yesterday. We spent the night Saturday in Middletown, OH, saw a great "US 122" sign goof on OH 122 but forgot to get a pic (I will try in 2 months when I am back in the area) ran I-75 south to Mt Vernon, KY then ran KY 461 to KY80 west to Somerset and had supper, then west on Cumberland PKWY to Glascow and ran US 31E south to US 231 south to the house. I see the new exit in Glascow is now fully opened. Other then that nothing much else to report, great seeing everyone again!

Drove over on Saturday morning and got back late Saturday night.

Took I-55 south to IL-47 through the Arsenal Road interchange construction (as seen at the Joliet meet in April).  There has been some progress since then.

(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi837.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fzz298%2Fmidamcrossrds%2F100_1958.jpg&hash=b7ca708d21ac56162807370899959f7e6c281281)

(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi837.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fzz298%2Fmidamcrossrds%2F100_1959.jpg&hash=27041d03da3282b6780bd74828f7c69580fe5f8d)

Along I-55, Exit 238 is now completely closed.

(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi837.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fzz298%2Fmidamcrossrds%2F100_1960.jpg&hash=988eb2d2f3d83f463ffae3312e8da57ca77755e1)

Even the pavement has been removed from the ramp.

(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi837.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fzz298%2Fmidamcrossrds%2F100_1961.jpg&hash=6d04980cb69349fdaefd91b9115376b3941f803f)

IL-47 was being repaved south of the Ford/Champaign County Line.

(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi837.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fzz298%2Fmidamcrossrds%2F100_1962.jpg&hash=14b9680411e7d02f898306e2edd7af4cc028544d)

Took IL-47 to Mahomet and then I-74 east to Indianapolis.  That finished off the original I-74 for me.  Then I took I-465 down to the Sam Jones Expressway.  Nice short road, must have been useful before the airport terminal was moved.  From there, it was I-70 east to I-75.  Indy has really low speed limits, IMHO, at 50mph in the city.  Most traffic was closer to 60mph.  Took I-75 down to the meet.

After the meet, I drove I-75 south to I-275 in Kentucky, and then I-275 back to I-74.

(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi837.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fzz298%2Fmidamcrossrds%2F100_1991.jpg&hash=1146c24077d8b90e2c25f01557efe38232618215)

I-74 west to I-465, and then north and west to I-865 and I-65 back up to I-80/94.  Most of the driving was fine and peaceful until I got to US-30.  Then all hell started to break loose.  Once on the Borman, I was confronted by the usual "combat driving" style of the average Borman driver.   :-o :fight: :verymad: :ded: X-(  Took I-80 back to Larkin Avenue (Exit 130).
