After posting some photos from today at https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=6302.0 -
I remember reading at CAHighways that Route 195 was to be decommissioned once the Route 86S expressway was finished. Yet, off of 86S, is this:

Does this mean that 195 will continue to be signed (status quo) for the immediate future? Also, I wonder when/if 86 will be moved off of old US 99 between Indio and Thermal and onto the 86S expressway, I had also thought that was the original plan.
that might be the only 195 shield. I had remembered maybe two surviving paddles as of 2007.
I think it is a fluke, like the 114 signing on 101 in the bay area.
And the VA 305 shields in Virginia Beach, which haven't been accurate since 1960.
CA-42 is still pretty well signed despite it being deleted long ago.
Here's another example of a route prominently mentioned on newer signage that I thought had been decommissioned entirely: Route 91 west of I-110.

The left-hand exit from I-5 to Firestone Blvd. was posted as 42 when I went by there in 2010. I figured that was a remnant sign, but is it still signed elsewhere?

Hmm.

Route 42 shield removed off of 110 in both directions:

No shield from 710 south (looks to be an early-90s replacement sign) -

Route 42 not on the signs off of 605 though they seem to date back to 1992 when 105 was built here (the replacement route for 42) -

Shield removed on the northbound 605 sign:

TheStranger seems to have covered it pretty well. there is also one surface-level JCT 42 assembly left: San Pedro Rd. southbound at Manchester Blvd (CA-42).
go ahead and steal the sign; it's not in very good condition.
I'd rather someone steals it and keeps it, than the highway department melts it down and turns it into a guardrail.

Route 86S is going to be renumbered to Route 86. The old highway has been relinquished, and Caltrans District 8 has ordered the new signs reflecting the changes. Some internal documentation and public outreach needs to be completed but the changes will be happening out there soon. I heard this directly from a colleague in District 8 when I was visiting there yesterday.
Thanks for the update! Does this mean 195 will be gone soon as well?
I find the newer 91 signage at 405 much more baffling - I don't think 91 has been signed west of 110 for years, yet the signs put up look to be less than 3-4 years old (after the relinquishment was made final!).

And for posterity's sake, here's the current 86/86S junction as of last week, which looks to be a vestige of the past soon enough:
