Title: Best of U.S. Highway images
Post by: mcdonaat on May 02, 2012, 03:55:14 AM
Just thought I would start a topic for old U.S. highway images. It can either be an old photo scanned, or a current one that shows the highway in a unique way. Posted a few below!

that LA US 165 is awesome.  too bad they couldn't use the right shield shape and fonts, like Missouri does on their US 66 historic signs.

That very old US 9 sign in Albany, NY looks like it was installed in the 1950s, older than I am, either on Clinton Avenue or Northern Blvd. (Henry Johnson Blvd. now). :hmmm:

For this reason, it will be a sad day indeed when the viaduct comes down in a few years.  I truly hope that sign gets a place of honor in a museum somewhere.

Has anybody contacted the Washington DOT about saving that sign?  They might just give it to you if you asked.

the 9 was once a white square and then got repainted.  That is 1960 spec.  Before that, in 1958, came the white square with "NY" or "US" in the crown as appropriate, and in 1964, NY adopted the black square and repainted the older white squares.

(before 1958, NY used cutouts exclusively, even where the 1948 MUTCD demanded white squares.  after 1958, the last of the cutout stock was used up... I've seen an embossed cateyed NY US 20 cutout that was stamped 1962 on the back)

Here is a set of pictures I took this past Saturday afternoon on my way out to go camping with my son and some friends at Toronto Lake, Kansas.  This is pretty much the first time I've taken road pictures for the sake of roadgeekiness.  May is a beautiful time to drive 400 in southeast Kansas:  the grass is green, and people aren't on vacation yet.  When the grass is yellow/brown, it's a lot less pretty of a drive.

US-54 / US-400 (Kellogg Ave.) in Wichita, as seen looking east from Edgemoor near my house
(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1092.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi410%2Fkphoger%2FMay%25202012%2FUS400_1.jpg&hash=933e3de9715f43938893c0f0ac87ebda557155fc)

Looking east upon leaving Augusta–54, 77, and 400 are triplexed for about 7 miles east of Augusta
(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1092.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fi410%2Fkphoger%2FMay%25202012%2FUS400_2.jpg&hash=9b4ff5e356311fab8c7795ad6a12a2ac4b253534)

Coming up to the split east of Augusta–I follow 400 from here

In the suicide lane, just east of the rest area near Beaumont

Wow!!  I'm going to make a few guesses on this. City Airport (Logan Field was the earlier airport nearby) was what is now the Dundalk Marine Terminal on the east side of Baltimore Harbor.  Given that the signs for the Business District, Philadelphia and the Airport all direct you to the right I believe this would be on the west side of Baltimore Harbor  near the modern MLK Blvd.  Since US 40 shoots pretty much west out of Baltimore along Franklin St and US 1 goes Southwest  down Washington Blvd somewhere just north of Camden Yards seems like the best guess for this

US 101 south, Thousand Oaks, California.
(This isn't actually sepia, just used a "in shade" white balance with a polarizer.)

That is beautiful. Pictures like that make me want to go back to California so badly. Kansas in May seems to have it's charm too.
