Title: I-83 PA: Interchange with PA 921?
Post by: sbeaver44 on May 11, 2012, 01:04:18 PM
I have always wondered why there was not an interchange built at I-83 and PA 921.  Local access direct to Dover and Manchester without using 295/181 could be afforded with this interchange.

When I was looking at the site of this possible interchange on Google Maps, I noticed that there are some features that indicate there was possibly an interchange prior here when this road was US 111 and not I-83.  Thoughts?  Look closely at satellite view.  In the NW quadrant of the junction there appear to be traces of ramps for a folded diamond, and the way that Willow Springs Ln approaches from the SE also looks like a ramp could have existed here.  This section of 83 is known for small interchanges, folded diamonds, and using local roads as part of interchanges.  (See Exit 35 with PA 177 about 9 miles north for a great example, or Exit 34)

If so, it was gone by 1961: http://www.historicaerials.com/aerials.php?scale=9.290957846205E-06&lat=40.0529024360112&lon=-76.7524691689375&year=1961

Interesting.  Perhaps one was planned and the local roads were built around it.

Thanks for the 1961 shot.

Seems to me that the SE road turns out to get away from the US 111 embankment, while the NW road was constructed around someone's property who was left in an "island" of land.

Does anyone else notice that the map doesn't align with the satellite image?

The "interchange" didn't exist in 1957 either:

And for the record, here's a photo of the area in 1938 before 83/111 was built:

The idea that there used to be an interchange there isn't convincing from the satellite photos shared.  It looks consistent with a usual local road realignment in the vicinity of a freeway, without ramps.  Some of the connections one might imagine as early interchange ramps may have been temporary construction entrances or old alignments of the local road, such as at the bend in the local road in the SE quadrant at its closest approach to the freeway.
