ETT (http://singularityhub.com/2012/04/26/from-d-c-to-beijing-in-2-hours-evacuated-tube-transport-could-revolutionize-how-we-travel/) would cost one-fourth the cost of interstate construction. Plus, you would be able to do more than 85! 4000 mph would get you from DC to Beijing in two hours. DC's I-366 could never match that.
What the hell is ETT?

The article didn't explain how the average Joe would be able to handle traveling at four thousand miles per hour. Is there something I'm missing here?
Bloody links look like normal text.

It's not speed; it's acceleration. At 1G you can get up to 4000 mph in about three minutes.
Conveniently fails to mention the problem of distance from the Earth's core. Energy is required to lift you away from the center of gravity. Where the heck do you build the tubes, either? On flat ground, sure, it could be cheaper than a freeway, but how about through the Rockies? Just tunnel through the entire Midwest?
Oh, and this is far more limiting than any other mode of transport. Get in a tube, get out the other end. You go where the tube goes.
I think that I'll wait for Starfleet to perfect the transporter system that they're working on.

(Alright, a perfect opportunity for a Futurama reference.)
They've got those tubes in New New York:

Oh that was definitely the best post ever
But at OP, I think it would be amazing, will it ever happen? No. You get the stupid people in the red states who don't wanna move forward into the future. Thats why states like Florida rejected the money to build a bullet train because its "European Socialism". Even in states like California that want it and plan it, there's too much stalling and people who wanna fart around with the planning and what not. If anything even remotely similar was build like this, it would probably be in Asia only and not between countries. It could be an upgrade to do away with bullet trains one day.

Holy crap, how did you turn fantastical pseudoscience geekery into politics? I think this is the defining moment where I officially give up on America. G'day, mates!

Not sure if that was sarcasm :P But I just meant to put a real world spin on it. If we cant even get a damn bullet train system started here which isn't even new technology what makes you or anyone think it would be possible to put a totally new type of transportation in?
Musk has
a lot of money, and this article (http://www.mnn.com/green-tech/transportation/blogs/elon-musks-new-idea-crazy-fast-trains) indicates that he might be serious about developing Hyperloop, which appears to be very similar to the ETT concept:
