Just what region is Wayne County in? All the NYSDOT stuff says region 4, but all the reference markers say region 3!
Currently Region 4. It was in Region 3 until the late 90s or so, and they were just too lazy to change all the reference markers.

Considering that NY reference markers usually show the old route number if a route is relocated and a new number takes its place on the old alignment, is it a case of "laziness" or simply a matter of not changing out markers that aren't redundant with others? As long as NYSDOT knows where each marker is, vestiges of old numbering aren't really a top priority.
That would explain why a lot of the markers look fairly new. There are a couple marked region 4 on NY 104 though. I figured there was a flip in there somewhere.

Good idea, although it's actually reference markers being discussed, not mile markers. But at least there's no need for a new thread if we do decide to discuss mile markers. :-)

It's mostly true, although the reference markers do act as stand-ins for mile markers. The bottom line may not be entirely accurate, but it does basically count off tenth-miles.

They incidentally do in most cases, but NYSDOT is so explicit about the fact that they're not mile markers (because the information they display is not to be altered even when the route itself is) that it seemed worth mentioning.
