Title: firefox help? do not refresh when clicking on a different tab?
Post by: agentsteel53 on June 12, 2012, 07:24:01 PM
the new firefox I just got (13.0 on Windows 7) has a new feature which I would like disabled.

I open a link in a new tab, and when I get to reading it, it refreshes the page!  this is not an action I would desire at all.  how do I turn it off?

I tried, in about:config, changing the "browser.taskbar.lists.refreshInSeconds" from 120 to 99999999, but that does not appear to help.  googling does not help, instead suggesting add-ons which add this functionality to older versions of the browser.  I would like to remove the feature.

any firefox gurus here?

I believe the "999999999" work-around does work.  it's just that pages you have opened before going into about:config are still set with a "120" internal timer.

I actually changed these two in about:config.  It might be redundant to do so.

accessibility.blockautorefresh = true
browser.taskbar.lists.refreshInSeconds = 999999999

an update on this: whenever Firefox 13 restarts and restores your tabs, the first time you view each of the open tabs, it will refresh.

so I've taken to simply going through every window and clicking every tab upon startup, just to avoid surprises later.

any actual solution to this problem is appreciated.  I've exhausted all my guesses in about:config for refresh-like behavior.

from online:

"EDIT: Or maybe it's not a "refresh" but simply: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/13.0/releasenotes/ "Restored background tabs are not loaded by default for faster startup" , is that it? can I still disable this though? "

(It seems like, basically, your new tab isn't actually loaded at all until you open it up.)

Tools->Options->Tabs-> uncheck [] Don't load tabs until selected.
OR
Tools->Options-> General -> uncheck [] Don't load tabs until selected

here's another website:

To change this you would need to change the setting for all restored background tabs, not just duplicates:
    Go to Firefox Menu \ Options \ General
    In the Startup section, un-tick "˜Don't load tabs until selected' and press OK to finish — tabs duplicated by TMP in a new window should now load and display automatically.
    If the "˜Don't load tabs until selected' option is ticked but greyed out, change the drop down option "˜When Firefox starts' to "˜Show my windows and tabs from last time' then un-tick the "˜Don't load tabs until selected' box and change back the "˜When Firefox starts' option to whatever it was before — then press OK to finish.
