Are the truck scales on the 405 in Torrance/Carson gonna reopen at some point?
I did a quick google search and checked out the CHP Forum. They said that if the scales get to busy causing truck traffic to extend into the freeway affecting regular traffic, then they close the scales for a short time. My guess is since that its the 405, the line of trucks waiting to use the scales always affected the regular traffic and the CHP decided to close the scales down for good.
The northbound scale is closed due to damage to the building and what is described as "inadequacy for future improvements". The southbound scale is closed due to necessary repairs for health reasons. The northbound and southbound scales are numbers 1 and 2, respectively, on the CHP's list of facilities for which they desire major upgrades. However, there is no funding available for those upgrades at this time. I am somewhat familiar with that facility, having driven by there many times (I am not a truck driver, but I have done a fair amount of work in my professional life at weigh/inspection stations in Maryland and Virginia).
Seems that this would be an
ideal location for high-speed weigh-in-motion and PrePass screening (not sure if California is a member of PrePass or not) of approaching truck traffic, so that only a relatively small percentage of the trucks get pulled in to the station itself.
