Has anyone noticed that on north-south hamilton county roads many of them end in W36 or W24, what does that mean?
Miles west of the zero line?
why is 136th street known as 136th street, smokey row road, and in some places 8th street n.e. all at the same time? what is really the official name of the road? (the same thing also happens with 131st street also being main street )
Yeah, the Wxx numbers you refer to are used for referencing the road as based to its position west of Meridian Street (US 31,) which is the main north-south axis through both Marion and Hamilton Counties. Of course, these numbers aren't used too much by anyone up there, calling them Towne Road, Spring Mill Road, etc is the way to go and the addresses are just your standard number going west from Meridian and north from Washington Street in Indianapolis.
I'll take my best crack to explain 136th Street. The name 136th Street refers to the name as it is called in Hamilton County. Smoky Row Road refers to the street's name in the city of Carmel and 8th Street NE refers to the street's name in the very center of the oldest part of Carmel, where there is a numbered street grid with the NE, SE, SW and NW endings to them. Of course, Carmel had annexed all of the area where 136th Street lies and the name is generally being reverted to just 136th Street, I believe, at least at Keystone Parkway it is called 136th Street. The same issue occured with Main Street a few street to the south with it being called 131st Street in some spots and Main Street in others. Carmel decided to end the confusion and call the whole road Main Street. I'm not sure if the same thing "has" happened to 136th Street, but it would get rid of the confusion. Hopefully this explains it.
it does thank u
