Title: Bridge removed over US-40 Dunreith, IN
Post by: Truvelo on July 09, 2012, 02:26:54 PM
This bridge (http://maps.google.com/?ll=39.801794,-85.44342&spn=0.014688,0.033023&t=k&z=16) has been removed since the imagery was taken. A quick Googling only finds the abandoned bridge was removed in 2007. Anyone know why it was removed. It allowed through traffic on route 3 to avoid US-40.

The purpose is to inconvenience trail users when the old railroad that the bridge crossed is converted.

It may have been any number of reasons - the bridge (built 1938) was crumbling and not worth replacing (with the railroad gone), Dunreith wanted through traffic taken off 1st Street, the route from US 40 east to SR 3 south was indirect, trucks had issues with the low clearance on Old National Road or the grades approaching the bridge...
