Title: Historical Routes
Post by: Voyager on January 19, 2009, 10:08:24 PM
What are some of the historical highway routes you've seen? There's plenty of highway signs for US 40 throughout the central valley and the bay area...and some 99 ones in northern California.

lots of 66es in every state that it goes through.

some 101s down here in San Diego County.

Vermont state route 7A is for some reason labeled as Historic - it's an old US-7 alignment, when US-7 was upgraded to a freeway.

Yup, here's one in Missouri:

that is a very nice one.  Correct fonts and everything.  I've seen a lot of screwed up ones.  Here is a reasonably correct 99W.

Where is that one? Looks familiar.

heading into Orland, northbound on old 99W (frontage road to I-5)

Note the I-5 paddle; this road was once signed as Temporary I-5.  The larger green sign is, I believe, original to the 1970s when the freeway was built and Temporary I-5 was downgraded.

Yep, I've been through there many times.

California and the U.S. 66 corridor tend to be the only places where historical routes are marked at all.

With that stated, I like following old stretches of U.S. 90 (Old Spanish Trail) and any section of old twin slab concrete that I can find.

I've seen a couple of Historic US 66's in Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. Never seen anything close in Louisiana, though... usually, the older segments are lucky if they get a street blade.

I totally forgot about several other historic markers here in CA.

US-6 in the Palmcaster area.

US-395 in Poway and a few other places south of Escondido.

US-80 in San Diego County.

I've heard there was a Historic US-50 shield on the business loop in Folsom but I've never found it.

also, for some reason, the Balboa Park Freeway in San Diego, originally US-395 and then CA-163 since about 1972, is signed Historic CA-163... with old white state shields, which were used before 1964!  Dunno who decided on that one... still, nice to see the white shields!

one more I just remembered, the White Pole Road in Iowa.  Not literally signed with the brown historic shields, but same basic idea.

it's an old US-6 alignment (bypassed in the 1940s, I think, by a newer two-lane alignment) and before the US highway system it was the White Pole Road, marked by white poles.

Caption: In 2003, California 163 between Interstate 5 and Interstate 8 was designated as an historic route. Brown signs such as this one were placed to designate the highway. The trouble is, this sign should have a California 163 shield or a U.S. 395 shield. The hybrid shield, however, is incorrect, considering that U.S. 163 is in Utah/Arizona. This shield used to be located along northbound 11th Avenue as it transitions onto northbound California 163; it was corrected by Fall 2003 with a white state shield. Photo taken 04/05/03.

that is very silly historical 163 signage at Balboa Park in San Diego California...sound like could be in Midwest US highway, my guess.

wow!  some error, and some correction they did.  white spade 163 was up in LA off the Arroyo Seco.  They need a classic CALIFORNIA/US/395 shield.

wonder what happened to the US 163 sign...

What are some of the historical highway routes you've seen?

I've seen 66, Lincoln Highway, Jefferson Davis Highway, National Road

Plus lots of historic trails (Santa Fe Trail, Chisholm Trail, Grant's March, Pony Express)

The thing is that the motoring public is now too young to being around when the old style shields were in use.

Given that it was last posted in like six days after the forum went public and today is the most recent day the forum has existed, I can say with certainty that it is a record...

This thread had been inactive for 99.75% of this forums life.

In Wisconsin, the Yellowstone Trail is marked throughout the state, and the Green Bay Ethnic Trail is signed as well.
