QuoteCLAY COUNTY, Ind. — The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has closed the State Road 46 Bridge over the Eel River effective immediately for structural safety concerns. INDOT's first priority is providing safe mobility for the traveling public.
Eastbound traffic will be detoured over S.R. 59 south to S.R. 246 east and back to S.R. 46. Westbound traffic will be detoured over S.R. 246 west to S.R. 59 north and back to S.R. 46. The state highway detour through Clay City adds approximately 7 miles.
Midday today, structural engineers retained by INDOT recommended closing the bridge after identifying more corrosion in the structural steel than was previously documented.
INDOT is investigating options to reopen the bridge as soon as possible. More information about timeline will be released as soon as it is known.
