I've been working on a new site (New York State Roads) for a bit now and was wondering what people think (in particular, content suggestions for the articles section). I'm still a long ways from having it ready on a permanent basis; the site I'm linking to hosted on a research machine I used and I feel no obligation to keep it up for the long run since I moved development to my laptop. I'm thinking the Fictional section will have fictional freeways and redesigned interchanges (though I need to play more with inkscape); no idea how I want to handle the photo gallery yet (self host or something like flickr?). Not sure where I'll ultimately host or get a domain name yet either.
I was thinking of splitting the intro page into some text on the home page and a couple articles.
No guarantees about how long the link here will work; I don't plan on restarting httpd the next time the computer reboots, and the IP isn't static either (though since it's on almost all the time it usually acts like one; the only time I saw it change was after the computer was turned off for a while when a major storm went through the area).

A general route list would be a great addition, IMO.
There are already other sites covering NY Roads (my www.alpsroads.net/roads/ny (http://www.alpsroads.net/roads/ny) front page links to a few of them), so think about what you can offer that the other sites don't have. Or just post your own photos and ideas there and use your individuality to make it unique.

Indeed there are. As far as exit lists go, I don't believe NYC has any in the format I use (I have to use street view for some of it to get everything in right), and Upstate NY Roads isn't always current (plus I measured everything out with Google Maps). I plan to do only the highlights on a topic if I think there's not any place to improve what another site has.

As Steve mentioned, other sites do a great job on this. I can look into seeing if there's something I want to do myself with this, but I don't feel the need to catalog every NY route given that there's another site keeping up to date on the same thing.
If you delve into the world of photos, please don't only take photos of road signs through your windshield. It seems that's what most people do, and they get pretty boring to look at.
I have become more of a fan of taking pictures from the side of the road when possible, but in some cases you simply can't. When riding in a car, the best way to take a picture is with a nice black shirt or installed dashboard cover to prevent windshield glare along with pristine windows. Just ask Alex about how often we have to stop to clean windows on any given roadtrip! Roadside sign pictures are always best taken when walking except when impossible along freeways and other limited access areas (plenty of danger when there's no sidewalks either!). Of course imagine how long your trips would take if you ran around taking sign pictures on foot all day!

Andy
