This will make all 240km of NB 1 a four-lane freeway, from the US Border in Saint Stephen to TCH 2 near River Glade.

I'm wondering, for purposes of the Clinched Highway Mapping project...
* Google shows Route 760 extended east along old Route 1 until the Manor Road Connector, taking that to end at Exit 52. Does Google have this right?
* How about old Route 1 from Pennfield to Lepreau? Know if this will be taken over by either Route 176 or 785?
Wikipedia's Exit list (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Brunswick_Route_1#Exit_list) suggests 785, but I haven't seen corroborating info anywhere else.

Great!
With Route 1 complete and the new bridge crossing at St. Stephen/Calais......this is a faster route for me to Bangor compared to NB95/I95 via Woodstock/Houlton.
Route 9 in Maine, the Airline might only be 2 lanes but I can usually "fly" through there at a pretty good speed. Not many towns between the Border and Bangor.

From what I saw a couple of weeks ago, old NB 1 between Lepreau and Pennfield will be replaced by NB 175. There were already some signs installed (and tarps were revealing enough) that stated this.

HOLY SOAP!@
It's a whole new designation!
Ch Manor Rd Connector (Av?) & Rte 760? (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dougtone/8075817506/sizes/o/in/set-72157631742027380/)
Looks like the eastward extension of NB 760 is confirmed!

I wonder why I-95 was built up to Houlton rather than to Calais to connect to NB 1. That would would have created a more logical connection to cities in the Maritimes than running to the border farther north in a remoter location.
New Brunswick Route 1 looks like a nice drive!

Probably to give Aroostook County the benefit of a modern controlled access highway even though it would be 2-lane for a number of years. And at Houlton......it's only 10 miles to a link with the Trans Canada at Woodstock, NB.
But if I-95 was to have been a link to the greater population centres of the Maritimes......Saint John, Moncton and Halifax......agreed......a link to NB1 would have been the more logical choice.
An Aroostook County STILL wants I-95 up the rest of the US 1 corridor to this day.

and then down Maine 11?
the last of US-1 has some
very low traffic rates.

And I spotted this archived copy of Mike Natale's toll roads on Archive.org
http://web.archive.org/web/20020614122005/http://www.contrib.andrew.cmu.edu/~mn2n/tollme.html who mentionned then the Maine Turnpike once studied the possibility to extent the Maine Turnpike up to Fort Kent.
I'm not sure that they ever *studied* extending it that far north per se - he looks to be referring to the original legislation that created the Maine Turnpike Authority, and authorized them to build a turnpike, if I remember the wording, "from a point at or near Kittery to a point at or near Fort Kent"
Edit: Back to the original topic, The NB1 Gateway opened today!

I'll miss the drive along NB1 from St Stephen to Saint John. It was one of my favorite drives. I love the huge Esso sign near Pennfield.

Well, then still go that way, nothing's stopping you.
Can't go directly from 45.166329°, -66.934515° to 45.160239°, -66.919861° anymore...

According to the map, you can't clinch NB 1 unless you can get on that segment though.
