Title: Divergent Diamond proposed in... Freeport Maine?!
Post by: yakra on October 27, 2012, 03:18:27 PM

QuoteThe I-95 Desert Road interchange in Freeport has considerable traffic that causes congestion issues at certain times of the day. The issue is predominantly at the southbound off-ramp, as traffic tends to backup periodically onto the Interstate.

MaineDOT has a potential solution to the traffic issue. The solution is called a Divergent Diamond Interchange.

Other states have constructed these interchanges, so please keep an open mind when viewing.
Congestion? I must be driving at the wrong times of day; I wasn't aware it was broke!
(Then again, I'm not sure if I've ever needed to make a left from the offramps...)

Apparently, MDOT didn't get the memo that they changed the number of that little highway of theirs to I-295 eight years ago.

The exit in question is *cough* Exit 19. ;) :poke:

Probably certain times of certain days during certain seasons. DDI is a relatively inexpensive solution, because it fits in a diamond footprint pretty much.

My sentiments exactly when the DDI was proposed in Rochester, NY. Maybe the design is particularly well suited to solving traffic issues that don't really exist?

Seems that a DDI works best when turning movements are high and traffic crossing the freeway is low. The fact that it fits not only in the existing footprint but on or under the existing bridges is a major plus.

I can believe a DDI there.  Even in the wintertime, there can be a fair bit of traffic going to/from LL Bean.

Some of my co-workers are doing the traffic simulation and analysis for this DDI.

I've created a GIS map that illustrates this DDI proposal, as well as under-construction improvements at Exit 15 in Yarmouth and posted them in a separate thread (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=11298.0).
