Hostess is now officially the ROCK ISLAND of junk food snack companies :-(
So if anyone wants Twinkies they better buy them now since Hostess is getting liquidated.
http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/breaking/chi-hostess-brands-seeks-court-permission-to-liquidate-20121116,0,3175964.story (http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/breaking/chi-hostess-brands-seeks-court-permission-to-liquidate-20121116,0,3175964.story)
Hostess Brands on Friday received a court order for an expedited hearing on its request to
liquidate.
The hearing on liquidation request is scheduled for 2 p.m. Eastern time Nov. 19, in bankruptcy court in White Plains, N.Y.
The bankrupt maker of Twinkies and Wonder Bread, said it had sought court permission to go out of business after failing to get wage and benefit cuts from thousands of its striking bakery workers.
Hostess, which has about $2.5 billion in sales from a long list of iconic consumer brands of snack cakes and breads said it had suspended operations at all of its 33 plants around the United States as it moves to start liquidating assets.
"We'll be selling the brands and as much of the infrastructure as we can," said company spokesman Lance Ignon. "There is value in the brands."
Hostess said a strike by members of the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union that began last week had crippled its ability to produce and deliver products at several facilities, and it had no choice but to give up its effort to emerge intact from bankruptcy court.
The Irving, Texas-based company said the liquidation would mean that most of its 18,500 employees would lose their jobs.
In the Chicago area, Hostess employs about 300 workers making CupCakes, HoHos and Honey Buns in Schiller Park. Hostess also has a bakery in Hodgkins, where 325 workers make Beefsteak, Butternut, Home Pride, Nature's Pride and Wonder breads.
Hostess spokesman Tom Becker confirmed that Hostess plants have closed, and the local factories in Hodgkins and Schiller Park ran their last production Friday morning. The company also has a plant in Peoria.
Calls to the Hodgkins and Schiller Park plants were not answered.
"I don't think it's a stretch to say there's a lot of sadness today," Becker said, adding that "18,500 people had jobs yesterday and knew they weren't going to have jobs anymore when they woke up today," referring to Hostess' total employee base.
"It's an extremely difficult decision for the company to have to make to shut down but unfortunately without the full involvement of its employees at the bakery, the company was unable to continue."
A statement on the Hostess Brands website begins with "Hostess Brands is closed."
Romney would have saved them.

Whaddaya mean no more Twinkies? You quoted right within your post:

Surely you don't think they won't find a buyer for the Twinkies brand???
Wait, so a business that relies on hundreds of distribution centers, razor thin profit margins, a lot of shipping, a declining market segment, and had already recently undergone bankruptcy went under?
(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fassets.sbnation.com%2Fassets%2F545142%2Fsurpriseface.gif&hash=6914bae329b3717ec041c19dc8a724e1c66ad50e)
Yeah, the union definitely expedited this, but Hostess was going under no matter what.

That's what I've been thinking as well as this "situation" has unfolded. Someone will buy the rights to the "Twinkie" and make that shit. Then there will be eternal debate among Twinkie aficionados about them being better/worse/same.
Picked up two 10-count boxes the other day, mainly just for the fun of it since I hadn't had a Twinkie in ages after I head about this. Too bad it had to come to this. :(

Until then, they'll run for $20-50 on eBay.
The Twinkie brand is controlled by another company in Canada, so you'll just have to drive north to get your sugar fix.
This fact actually made the 6 o'clock news the other night.

The cynic in me wants to believe that someone, somewhere will find a way to make these little snack cakes with natural ingredients.

For the heck of it, I decided to try a Twinkie a couple of years ago (hadn't had one since I was a kid). IMO, not nearly as good as they used to be, so I don't see much debate on the matter.
What I'm sad to see go, and are far less likely to be picked up by another snack food maker, are Drakes Yankee Doodles (and Sunny Doodles). Unlike Twinkies, those have retained their basic recipe - and overall quality - over the years.

But then they won't have a 100 year shelf life (or survive an atomic blast).
Disclaimer - yes, I know that's not true. Wonder if the folks hoarding cases and cases of Twinkies for resale on eBay (at last check, there were almost 17,000 entries under "Twinkies" - the majority being the actual product) are aware of the short shelf life.

They never could anyway. They last 25 days. I know, I've picked up a number of them from under grocery gondolas when i was working my way through college. Twinkies do in fact grow mold.
They're fattening, and for that reason I don't have good memories about them. I am at BMI 25 now, BTW.

Yes, indeed. Twinkies are actually one of the worst pastries as far as shelf life is concerned (I work in vending).
I used to work in vending, and I can tell you you had to keep an eye out for them as they do spoil fast.
Incedently, I bought my last cupcake and Snoball in Walgreen's yesterday. Even though it is bad for me, what the heck. I will never see it again. Another American pastime gone.

Bimbo already makes them for the Mexican market as it is.
The BMI is bullshit. According to it, many pro athletes would be considered "obese."
I don't understand all these people moaning about "the last Twinkie ever!". Surely a brand with that much recognition will be acquired by another company, which will then start selling Twinkies again.
As for the question of 'new Twinkies' tasting the same... were Twinkies ever good in the first place?

Listed height - 6 ft 6 in
Listed weight - 216 lb
Your BMI: 25.0
-- IOW, not overweight.
Now if you are 5'2" and weigh 216 pounds, and are not athletic, you are obese.

You said that you believed the BMI was accurate. Which is indirectly saying that I'm obese. I simply asked you if you lost 150 lbs since the roadmeet picture was taken.
I'm over 6 feet tall, and weigh less than 125, maybe even less than 120. A couple of years ago, we signed up at the YMCA, and they had me use one of those handheld automatic BMI calculators. I don't how it works, but you just hold it with your hands and it tells you your BMI. Mine returned an error code. :)
Found out that my local Walmart (just a Walmart, not a supercenter) has a full stock of Twinkies and other Hostess brands. I don't care about the Twinkie, but I do care about cupcakes and mini muffins.

Never cared for them, they haven't been good in years. Fruit is better.

Oh, trust me, that is not the problem. The difference between me eating light and healthy and eating like a pig is
maybe five pounds. I'm worried I'll end up with cholesterol problems later in life because of that, because nothing is forcing me to watch what I eat.
My "BMI" is a little over 30. While I have a beer belly and I need to lose some weight, there's no way I'm "obese." As I said, I have a large frame and wide shoulders. The BMI is weighted (no pun intended) towards those with small frames.
Nothing lasts forever...including snack cakes we grew up with and loved. May the last twinkie last into immorality in someone's disaster kit whenever the world ends. I grew up with Twinkies, Ho-hos, Cupcakes and other goodies made by the Hostess company based in San Francisco, the closing down of the company is bad enough for the golden state's ailing economy. I wanted to introduce my children to Hostess treats, then again it's bad eating habits I'm promoting (LOL), but they been around for 80-some years when my grandparents were young themselves, talking about passing down great desserts

Somehow, I doubt we've seen the end of Twinkies. I'm sure once they clear bankruptcy, they will find a new owner. It would be great if the employees could pool their money together to buy it.
Either way, I'm sure they will be around for a long time.

There's such a thing as "overweight" without being "obese".

I have a small frame, and as a teenager my body weight considered underweight (which I could help much - it's pretty much impossible for me to put on weight beyond a certain, rather skinny, level). BMI was biased against my skinny frame.
In fact, even when I was the BMI I am now (while I've put on a pound or two and finally have 30" waist, I've also grown an inch) as a student I was on the threshold. However, they have ended that bias against skinny frames (certainly not biased it to such frames) shifted the bottom end down (why?), so all my teenage underweight years now wouldn't be.
In other words, BMI is a poor guide.
