Title: Vid's Typology of Simple, Complete Service Interchanges (and scavenger hunt)
Post by: vtk on November 26, 2012, 11:50:22 PM
For some reason, last year I came up with a classification scheme for service interchanges.  This scheme covers most complete service interchanges.  Not included are SPUIs, or anything with flyovers or flyaround ramps.  Roundabouts, channelized right turns, or signalized right-turn-only ramp termini are considered minor variations on the basic types in this scheme.  Also, I'd like to find real-world examples for each design, so I suppose a scavenger hunt is in order!

A11/Twisted diamond: http://goo.gl/maps/XNDSw (surprised that one was left open -- although now PennDot beat me to it while I was babbling about NJ 18)

I notice there aren't any examples given for what you call "Strange parclos".  I'm wondering what the point would be of having a bare loop ramp like that without the corresponding right turn ramp.

(As I was writing that, I realized the southern end of NJ 18 used to have one -- still visible in satellite http://goo.gl/maps/asjI5 -- but that's a special case, and since there were/are missing movements, it's not diagrammed here.)

ETA: And lo! He found some strange parclos as well.  Makes them no less baffling to my eyes though.

Apologies in advance as Google's link tool won't work on this iPad. Anyway, an example of A05 can be found on exit 48 on I-74 in Galesburg, IL.

Edited to add the link: https://maps.google.com/?ll=40.946519,-90.333152&spn=0.011102,0.019376&t=m&z=16

The interchange you linked to does not match the diagram.  In A17, there are ramps in only 3 quadrants, whereas in your I-95 example there are ramps in all 4 quadrants.

Perhaps a typo on his part?  Looking closely, I'm pretty sure it's an A27.

Darn it, I should have had A28.  I-5 @ WA 512 used to be a full cloverleaf, but is now a pretty classic example of that.

Whoops, it was indeed a typo. Meant to say A27, not A17. It's been edited!

I grew up 1.5 miles from this interchange, remembering the way it looked before the highway was built, and the whole construction process.  Rt. 553 - Woodbury Glassboro Rd - remains the thru road.  Rt. 676 - Mantua Blvd - used to cross as an 'X' with 553, but was completely realigned due to the highway.  Mantua Blvd used to continue to the lower right of the linked map, which is now Church St., so named for the church on the street, which is where my wife went to school. Behind the new Lowes there is a very large pit which used to be a signficant dinosour bone find area.

Ah, memories... (My parents still live in the same house, so I'm in the area frequently).

A44: A-10 exits 37 and 68

EDIT: As an explanation, butterfly interchanges are used on toll roads and former toll roads to force all movements through a single toll barrier.

Actually, that appears to have some missing movements.  It's not covered by this typology.

I only got as far as Steve's submissions; that's all I have time for at the moment.  By the way, if anyone has any "other names" to add for some of these, I can add them in.  Having most only as "parclo" or "strange parclo" is a bit monotonous.

You can rotate the diagrams as much as you want.  Reflections are required for drive-on-left locales, but invalid everywhere else.

Yes, I believe there was a thread about this regarding some interchanges on Kentucky parkways, and that's where I would have looked first for an A44.  And now that I've found the time to revisit this thread and add your examples, I believe I am caught up.

Still needed:
Not all of those are strange parclos.  A few are strange half-butterflies (should I add that term to the chart?) and there's one ordinary parclo and one of the twisted diamonds left without examples.
